phuck that I would never want to live in the same building as those free loading public housing cockroaches, separate entrance or not.

Yes the business is justified, they can do whatever they want. But again, who would want to live there with swine? You work hard and buy a nice place to live amongst others in your class, not peasant trash.

Devil is all in he details? What do you consider a luxury apt building?

Where I'm from, that's where the doorman knows everyone's name. Most tenants drive an S class, Bentley, Ferrari etc (New York probably different)
Average income in a luxury apartment is in the $3-400k range.

If this is in line with your definition, how could your girlfriend not be able to discern an executive at a bank vs a family that lives their with government assistance? Are people really that far out of touch?

You give someone an inch, they take a mile. Never understood that mentality.
Seriously, this is why I don't give chit to homeless people anymore. Most are a bunch of ungrateful fuks even if you do. This homeless lady tried to steal my drink I ordered at a boba tea place. And then she asked me to buy her one after I stopped her from stealing mine. I was like are you fukking srs?

That's a bit overboard (I know your trolling, at least I hope so)

There are plenty of families on government assitance that just caught a bad break. Could be refugees from a war, etc. all I'm saying is they should be gracious, lay low, and just go about their business without drawing too much attention.

Same as if I were to go to a gas and the gas station guy asks me for my w2 and decides to charge me more per gallon because my income exceeds their idea of average.

The building has to also consider that in order to attract high paying residents, it has to maintain a certain appearance and unfortunately lower income people have no place on that appearance.

We did not create the class divide, people are naturally divided not because of inequality but simply because certain people are more capable than others.
I disagree with it being unfair to wealthier tenants. If their landlord doesn't want to pass long the savings they are making via their tax break that is not the fault of tenants who, in effect, provide those tax breaks. As well, whether or not that value is coming out of pocket for those tenants paying a subsized rent doesn't change the fact that they add signifcant value. Significant enough to warrant their presence.

To answer Op. I think it makes the apartment building look low class, not for accepting a tax break but trying to conceal it. You are either luxury and exclusive or you are not. It strikes me as frauding.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Dude, you can't tell who is rich by just looking at them... I live in a luxury apartment building like you described and there are some fukking slobby ass looking people that live here, they are definitely rich though. Also a bunch of really old people live here and old people often look like bums just from being old.

The CEO of my company looks like some kindly old man and comes to work dressed like Mr. Rogers every day. If I just saw him on the street, I would have guessed he was a public high school teacher making like $40k a year. But he's CEOing

I agree and this is the case. She's definitely missing the perspective of those who have millions in net worth who want the best for their family. The segregated entrance may be petty and snobbish, but people with money know that already and want those barriers to keep the lower classes out/away.

Not trying to justify the caste system here, but it was her failure to recognize some of this is human nature. If you don't have money you shouldn't expect to have it as good as those who do.

I also agree to a point made above, this is the buildings attempt at saving face.

As I said, Devil is in the detail.

You say you live in a luxury apartment where every other car is a Ferrari, Bentley, or Aston Martin but there are people walking around looking like slobs? No way.

Most people that are rich but don't show it don't live in fancy LUXURY apartments.
You probably don't know what you are looking for. Most people would look at a watch and think it's like any ole watch you buy at Macy's. Little do they know some of those watches cost $30k and up. Devil is in the details.

The poors should be forced to wear signs that say "poor person" whenever they are in or around the building if they want to be allowed to live there.

Tell her to shift the perspective. Would she be cool if they built a half way house in the same plot as your building? Or better yet took your building and used half of e units in it as a halfway house? I wonder what her perspective would be then.

Most people hold to this idealistic viewpoint until it messes with their world. Then it's, o way....not in my building.....

Btw for anyone interested. This arguement was sparked by the HBO documentary "Class Divide."

Worth the watch, it offers perspectives from both sides.

I don't mean they look like ghetto trash or anything, but a good portion of them dress quite modestly, like middle class people. And like I said, I think old people often look slobby just by being old and there are a ton of old people here. Also there are plenty of really fat people here that look and dress like guidos, they kinda gross me out but I know they are rich. Also I dress middle class as well, you would never guess I live in a luxury apartment by looking at me

We are kind of debating a meaningless point, though. To get back on topic, I don't approve of giving subsidized apartments in a luxury building. If you want the luxury living, work for it and earn it, don't just expect it to be given to you. A big reason people live in luxury apartments is to NOT have to live with low class bums. There is a lot more mutual respect amongst my neighbors here than anywhere else I have ever lived as a result. I would move out of my building if they started subsidizing apartments.

Honestly this is the exact reason I want to live in a gated country club neighborhood, zero chance of any peasants reaching me.

I never understood the gated life until now. But I wouldnt be surprised if one day the gov mint forced even the country clubs to have 15% of the properties section 8 housing....sad, sick and true

I'm not saying these welfare recipients are bad people, but more than likely they are and when you've worked hard to earn your money you can't stand losers.

$100-400k IS middle class.

And DonBlaximus, dont give me the BS that $300k is a lot of money, its not, it maybe gets you a used $125k gallardo, $70k SUV and a $700k condo, thats 2 beds 2 baths, hardly balling and you know damn well thats the truth

Who said that's a lot of money? I said the AVERAGE SALARY is $300k. Do you know how averages work? Typically because not everyone works in the building it brings the average down. So in fact the bread winners are in the millions while their stay at home wife or their neighbor who is now retired brings that number down.

Are you arguing you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between someone ,asking $3-500k and someone living on govt assistance? That was the conversation. I'm sorry but you are either trolling or your reading comprehension is terrible.

Earning 3-400k a year would put you in the top 5% of income earners in the United States... how is that middle class? I hope you are trolling

You're kinda right in the context of this specific luxury apartment building.

$10-15 million units are far out of reach for the upper middle class, people who can afford those apartments mostly exude wealth with their private drivers, au pair's, etc..

Definitely quite a clash of cultures when they're in the same residence as your typical public housing candidate.

I don't get the argument from her side. How is that a humanitarian issue? It's technically separate housing. If you want to go in through the front, make more money, work harder, and there you go. The opposing view is pure entitlement mentality. Business rules. The system allows this sort of loophole, and they took advantage of it. Not their fault. It is their business. They are free to do what they want barring they stay in the confines of rules/regulations/laws.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Honestly unless someone brought it up to me, I would not have even thought about that being an issue in any way.

Thank you.

$300k gets you a $9k a month 900 sq ft average apartment in manhattan.

Its sick, people there talk about $6 million dollar lofts like nothing, you would need $1-1.5 mill just to afford a place like that

I live in the midwest and am embarrassed to make only $160k a year

Hilarious that you chose to ignore my response to you and continue down this path. Your selective reading is laughable. AVERAGE SALARY of $300k is very different from a $300k salary.

Only the richest zipcodes in all of america average $300k salaries. Most. Lower.

I see what the counter-argument is, but lets get one thing straight, they have low income housing that SPECIFICALLY deny people above a certain income bracket. These income restricted communities only rent to people who are on the people's dime, are low income or are both. Why is it the wealthy or "luxurious" minded groups always having to cave in one way or another to lower income individuals and families? WHO end up pulling money out from the public treasury to live? Its similar to making minimum wage at 40 years old with a family (outside of past financially strenuous circumstances) and then rolling up in a brand new Cadillac while babbling on an iPhone 7. Why must it be just one way?

Personally, I think it should just be one entrance, but at the same time I definitely see why they'd want to separate entrances based on what they're basing it off of, and I finally support the landlords and management companies in doing that.

No I totally agree with you on the dressing part.

I guess the only thing I'm saying is that $300k is not a lot of money. In Manhattan is damn near lower middle class levels.

What we are talking about here specifically are people that live in luxury apartments in Manhattan worth millions. Not wealthy people from all over america.

Even when someone dresses down, I can tell wi high accuracy if they are or are not living on government assisted housing in a lucpxury apartment in Manhattan. This is in fact the discussion we are having.

You need to go back and re-read my words. An average salary for a concentrated population of $300k is a **** ton of money. A salary of $300k isn't balling. But if you live in an area where the AVERAGE salary is $300k, you are in the upper 1%
