Arguement with my GF regarding "class divide" issues, who's right?

There's a high end luxury apartment in Manhattan in NYC in a great neighborhood, the government offers tax breaks to the building if a certain number of apartments are designated for public housing.

This particular building took advantage of those tax incentives, however, they created a side entrance for those with the public housing units in this luxury building.

Without explaining my viewpoint or my girlfriends, I'd like to know how the misc views this separate entrance for those in this apartment building who have those public housing units.

us brokecels are people too. No need to demoralize people by making them take a side entrance. It will only polarize the tenants and cause animosity.

From a business aspect, you cater to the people who are bringing you more money. Its understandable to try to please the tenants who are presumably paying you more by offering them amenities or things that they request which is what i would classify as separating "classes" in the apartment building.

From a humanitarian perspective, everyone should be treated equally as well because one person isn't better than another because they bring in more money.

I personally think the business aspect is more sensible

it just reinforces the caste system and remind us low/middle class scum how grateful we should be to breathe the same air as our Manhattan lords.

I would choose the business aspect as in the real world people are judged on how much value they create in society
This is exactly our arguement. I too saw it the way you did, from a business perspective. A building owner would be concerned over the perceived value and exclusivity of their pricey apartments.

Such is the beauty of the free market that if you don't like something you are completely free to ignore it and go about your life unharassed. Those that do like it can associate with the people who provide it.

And such is the degeneracy of statists that they would remove your right to do as you wish by coercing others to bend to their will and their preferences

I reject the whole premise. I don't think the building should receive tax breaks or benefits to let the poor people move in at all. Therefore, I give 0 ****s about the entrance. After I got divorced I was rejected to live in an apartment because I made too much $. I will never forget that. The place was reserved for people that couldn't afford it.

I'm not completely familiar with public housing, so my answer will depend on:

1.Free rent (meaning those under public housing do not pay to live there). You're living in luxury apartments for free- don't complain. Gotta problem with it, move somewhere else. Of course I think it is elitist/douchey to have segregated entrances and I doubt the type of people who would enforce such a thing would be people I would like, but if they own it, it's their right. I'm not a fan of telling other people what they can do with their property (why I could never deal with an HOA community).

2.They pay a reduced rent. My answer is basically the same as before, but I can see more of an argument for not having segregation in this case. They are contributing to the cost of the building, even if not quite as much.

Regardless of those 2, there are two points that pretty much apply to me:1.It's super snobby, elitist, and the people are likely huge douchebags for caring that much about having the "common folk" taking a back entrance and2.if you own the place, you can apply whatever arbitrary/bigoted/elitist/etc rules that you want, IMO.

It's similar to the religious nuts refusing to serve gays argument. They should absolutely be able to refuse to serve gays if theyownthe establishment (a worker who understand that it is their job to serve gays for another establishment isnotthe same thing AT ALL). It also allows me to identify who the bigots are and I can direct my money elsewhere. Win/win in my book.

From the building owners perspective however, if you are so worried about the value of your property, don't take the tax break and keep the tenants exclusive.

Personally, if i was in the public housing section of the apartment building i would be grateful that i got the chance to live in a luxury apartment in a nice neighborhood and wouldn't give a chit if i had to go into a separate entrance. It is a positive sum game, the apartment building gets the tax break for providing public housing, and the tenants get the opportunity to live in a nicer place. So what if they get a different entrance?

Fair point. It does seem like they want to have their cake and eat it too, definitely seems like an effort to keep their wealthy tenants happy while still holding onto the benefits of allocating units for public housing.

That's the problem with most people, they are ungreatful.

Just the other day I was leaving the gym in San Diego. A homeless kid walks up to me and ask for money. Told him I didn't carry cash (I dont to the gym) but I'd buy him a quick meal at Taco Bell we were standing in front of. He walked in and ordered some quesadillas, 10 tacos, and a bunch of other stuff.....I didn't even let him finish ordering when I told him, He was out of line and I walked out.

You give someone an inch, they take a mile. Never understood that mentality.

Fine with separate entrance. If you don't maintain the exclusivity it's no longer a high end apartment and your business model is now different and possibly dead.

Not sure how I feel on the abuse of tax system yet.

I can't imagine how that works. What every fifth or so balcony there will be a close line draped across it with public housing's underwear hanging from it?

Are these units places people buy or rent?

The whole design of the building should have been approved by the Department of Building and Safty, so I assume that they followed whatever codes and rules they had to to get their plans approved. In that case they did nothing wrong.

IMO I don't really have a problem with it unless it inconveniences the people that have to use the side entrance.

Like if the the poor people can't use the main even if they want to, or have to go out of their way to use "their enterance"- that's messed up.

$100 Paypal says your stupid ass girlfriend thinks something along the lines of it being "wrong" to treat the public housing people "differently" by making them use a different entrance. Hah, I don't know what sort of images are associated with this housing dichotomy. I do know that public housing in luxury buildings is in such high demand there's essentially a lottery for it amongst those in the system.

The lower income residents should not complain considering that they are getting premium housing at a discounted rate. While everyone else may pay $5,000 a month per unit, they may only have to pay $1,000 or whatever the arrangement may be. In any case, this is very unfair to the wealthier tenants; they are forced to pay more on account of their income. Same as if I were to go to a gas and the gas station guy asks me for my w2 and decides to charge me more per gallon because my income exceeds their idea of average.

The building has to also consider that in order to attract high paying residents, it has to maintain a certain appearance and unfortunately lower income people have no place on that appearance.

We did not create the class divide, people are naturally divided not because of inequality but simply because certain people are more capable than others.

She's a staunch conservative but this issue threw her.

Her point was mainly: If you're paying in full for your apartment or being subsidized by the government, why would there be such a superficial image issue requiring people to utilize separate entrances. And how could one even properly discern who was and who wasn't in the public housing units (this gets into stereotyping which I do more of than she does).

Of course it's in high demand. Why the f wouldn't Eziel (no racist, Friday reference) want to live in a luxury high rise?

Inconvenience having to enter through the side? What.....would they rather live in Queens bridge? Is that more convenient?
