I always wondered if the hotel can tell if you have your TV on and what channel you're watching.

I don't like my room looking like it's empty, so I just leave the TV on.

Room service: Yes, all the time. "What can I get you for a tip" etc
Check ins: I mean it's a high end hotel, so it's not like a sleazy motel, but yeah, you can usually tell. The driver's license says they live here in town, one night stay, and don't want their name on the room, etc.

$1 per guest per day is the rule of thumb. If I'm somewhere for a week I usually leave a $5 but I'm not very messy in a room.

Yeah, peoples privacy is a big concern, celeb or not. Like imagine a guy there with his side chick, and the wife finds out he's staying there. Divorces him, gets half, and he turns around and sues the hotel.

In for crazy hotel stories. As someone who travels quite often, I am mortified and curious at some of these posts already.

I've def had my fair share of being out in town in bringing sloots back to my room for the night. Front desk knows exactly what I'm doing lol. Especially the hotel I stay at once a month for government work.

I remember being insanely drunk one night from Four Lokos and Gin&Redline at a hotel in Atlantic City, NJ and filled a drawer in the room full of cheerios and milk. Idk what the hell I was thinking.

What is the deal with this? The fancier the place, the more they want to charge you for. I stayed at a Holiday Inn recently, not realizing it isn't the same thing as a Holiday Inn Express (supposed to be better, LMAO). Went down that morning pumped for Holiday Inn Express breakfast and it's like $12. I was pissed as fuk. Any place under $80-ish (price depends on location) has FREE EVERYTHING, and any place over that charges for breakfast, charges for wi-fi, charges for a toothbrush if you need one, etc, etc, etc. Drives me crazy.

Do most housekeepers get upset when there's no tip or become judgmental on the amount like majority of restaurant servers do?

ie. not cleaning your room or replace sheets like they're supposed to when there's no or little tips.

Also, what's the best way to ensure they're actually replacing your sheets, towels, pillowcases, etc.? I usually just rolled them all up and leave it on the floor.

tl;dr - what's the best way to keep your housekeepers happy while doing their job properly without disrespecting them by giving them more work unintentionally?

Not when I worked that department, but maybe it has changed? We can DEFINITELY tell what movies you rent, and how long you watched them for - people would say their kid ordered a movie by mistake. If it ran 5 minutes, we'll credit you. Watched the whole thing? You're paying. People also used to rent 5 minutes of an adult movie and have the guts to ask for a refund lmao

Really depends on occupancy. If the hotel is fully booked, you're getting the type of room you paid for. If it's quiet, they can pretty easily move you up to a better room. Being nice is the best way, serious: I've worked a dozen different jobs in the industry and front desk is the hardest, hands down. People complain to you/yell at you for stuff that happens in EVERY department of the hotel. Be nice to the front desk person, chat them up, ask what kind of room you're in, and if it's possible to get something better. Some people will stack a $20 between their ID and Credit card and slide you everything at once.

I worked a cubicle/desk job straight out of college and HATED it. I was 22 and sat in my little cube with my phone, my computer, and it felt like I was dying. Hotels is a fun job if you want a lot of variety to your day, there's always something different going on.

Making as much money as people are willing to pay you is basic business amigo. We charge for EVERYTHING at luxury hotels, but people are willing to pay it. However, Mrs. B used to work for Hilton and we could stay anywhere for like $50-75 a night. To this day she thinks it's crazy to pay more than $100 for a room, so there you go.

Nah, housekeepers make an hourly wage, they're not tips based like a server is. I've never heard of a housekeeper screwing with a guest b/c of no tip, but I bet there's some cheeky latina out there re-arranged a guest's stuff to phuck with them.

Ball the towels up and put them on the floor. We're an eco-friendly hotel so if you don't do that they will leave them for you to reuse. If you made a big mess I'd say leave a bigger tip, but it's not really necessary. In the same way restaurant workers tend to tip the most at restaurants, I ALWAYS tip my housekeeper since I know what they put up with, but that's any profession.

One property I worked at had a beachfront restaurant facing out on the sand. Up on a high floor, like 12 or some chit, this couple got into a crazy, knock-down drag out, end of the relationship argument in their room, and the dude evidently snapped and was like "I'm leaving you here!" and threw her SUITCASE off the balcony. Dropped 12 stories down and DETONATED in the middle of a table where this family were having dinner. Thankfully the only injury was somebody got cut from a piece of flying glass, but it could have easily killed somebody.

Depends on the place. Our housekeepers clean 8-9 rooms a day, so in an 8-hour shift including getting supplies and getting their day started/ended they're in each room for 30 or 40 minutes. When I travel I always ask my housekeeper "Cuantos Cuartos Hoy?" (How many rooms today) and some places have them cleaning 20+.

If your housekeeper is only in your room for 10 minutes, I got sum bad news.

Nah people leave their stuff behind all the time. We just throw it out. When people are smoking on their balcony by the pool etc, and it's really obvious what they're doing (everyone can smell it etc) we'll go up and tell them "Sorry, but this is a non-smoking room. Especially THAT kind of smoking, you understand?" Have only had to get the cops involved once.

We did have a guy come screaming that their housekeeper stole his girl's necklace from their room, and he absolutely REEKED of pot. Asked if we could go in the room to search for it (lol), he refused. Politely took his info, but also asked that he call us if it did turn up. He called 5 minutes later to say it was sitting on the desk in the room.
