One word: spurious correlation. This is tragic but compare that too how many people drink pots of coffee everyday without issue and it seem silly to even publicize. Like someone dying from drinking too much water.
In any event, I do agree that energy drinks need to be taken with caution of you're under 18.

we have not spent the last 65 million or so years finely honing our physiology to watch Oprah. Like it or not, we are the product of a very long process of adaptation to a harsh physical existence, and the past couple centuries of comparative ease and plenty are not enough time to change our genome. They don't know of any heart condition.
That does not mean he didn't have one they are as of yet unaware of or something else wrong. Obviously he did.

I drank about 4L of energy drinks once when I was 16 or 17. I was pretty shaky but obviously I'm still alive.
(Specifically, it was a 12 can flat of 250 ml cans and then two full sized Rockstars.)

5 grams of caffeine will kill a healthy 200 lb male.
Not even a gram in what was consumed in op article.

A guy I knew died last year suddenly, he was 30 about as healthy as you could expect. Former baseball player, still in great shape pretty lean, worked out, etc. would always have a monster energy drink on him every time I'd see him. One day at work he just collapsed, cardiac event.

Obviously something else at play here. Either he took something else, or he had a preexisting condition. A normal healthy individual will not die from taking 350mg of caffeine in 2 hours.
EDIT: And if it was some reaction to the "cocktail" or the way they were mixed/ingested, then you can't blame that on straight caffeine.

Looked up my daily French press coffee habit. 650 mg caffeine estimated. 2/3rds of that by about 9 am, then the rest mid-day. So far so good. No inclination to give it up.

Not even that much caffeine. How can they say that's what caused it? I could drink four red bulls in my early 20s in two hours while working in a 100+ degree kitchen.
