My father growing up. He would mix pain meds with a bottle of jack or crown a day. He has ruined his life. He beat me daily for years, treated me like **** on his shoes, beat my mother and his current wife, got a couple of DUI's threatened to kill me when I tried to help. Now he just drinks within reason, but he lost his job, his family, his house, I, nor my sister speak to him, and he has been in the psych ward for attempting to kill himself. His alcoholism stemmed from his child hood, his dad drank and beat him senseless, he in turn did the same and acted the same. I decided to break the cycle, I want to have a happy family with children that are spoiled.

Alcoholic ways of dying have you suffer terribly for years. The worst is the suffering it causes you to unleash on your family. Emotional abuse, neglect, etc. Their spouses and kids are scarred for life.

They had that one teen on that intervention show that was hospitalized. While in the hospital he was squirting the hand sanitizer on the wall into a cup and diluting it with water.
That episode and the bulemic mom that would hide 1 gallon bags of vomit in her closet and dump them all (18-21 bags total) at the end of the week ... fuuuuudge.
I have a pretty good rule of thumb with people when they tell you something private or you notice something. Take whatever it is and multiply it by 10 and that's really how serious their issue is.

dad...Would walk around the house like a zombie, downing god knows how many beers/liquor a day. Was functional his whole life but over hte past 10 years or so it got the best of him. Stopped working. Would go on benders for weeks at a time, where he'd barely even eat. Would drop 10 pounds or so. Face would get all ashy and discolored. Would stare into space until he had the impulse to grab another beer. Then he'd finally come out of the bender. Where he would experience intense withdrawals. To the point where we had to take him to the hospital a few times. Did this off and on for about 5 years, til his body couldn't take it anymore.

Chose Fireball because of the cinnamon flavor he felt he could hide best with Big Red gum...don't have much contact with him anymore but still see him and his equipment every so often around jobsites....has to be in his late 40's now.

I don't think anyone has ever called them out or tried to help. Pretty sad actually.

A guy I worked with who only lasted a month and a half. He missed half his shifts and showed up drunk the other half. The scary part is I'd have no idea he was drunk because he was completely functional, though a bit of a whiner.
Looked him up the other day and he's still alive, hope he gets on track.

One guy I used to work with used to drink so much rum he would then have to drink a pint of milk to settle his stomach. We figured he was likely over the legal limit at all times. He lived in an apartment above his mom, and after she died he didn't make it a year before he went over the edge and drank himself to death.
The other was a longtime family friend who hid it. She would drink after her kids went to bed and her husband who worked nights would go to work. She finally got cirrhosis so bad she just couldn't hang on. Left behind 4 kids the youngest not even in high school.
It's those two examples that prove to me alcoholism is really a disease. My sincere and eternal respect to those who are recovering every day and to those working hard to be their support system.

I drove forklifts all thru school (pays good and GOAT student job b/c it's brainless, so it's totally stress free for an overworked student brain).
Lots of young guys like me in the warehouse and it was fun listening to hnnng tunes all day but the "career" warehouse workers were pretty depressing.
One dude used to smell like cheap booze and cigarettes ALL the time. He would disappear at lunch and I guarantee he was drinking somewhere. I gave him rides home a few times and from the little I learned about him, his entire family had basically turned their backs on him after years of him fukking everyone over with his actions.
^^Despite that, and being drunk(ish) behind the wheel all the time, dude was an ACE forklift driver. Almost more depressing if you think about it - his body so used to being in that state.

My old man.
Lost his family, career, pension (drunk at work) been in and out of rehab & jail for the last 20 years.
Same story with everyone on his side of the family, there are like 8 of them that did the same thing in my lifetime.

Having an addictive personality is the disease. If it wasn't for alcohol it would be drugs or gambling. Everyone knows people like this. A guy I grew up with has a drug problem and before that it was a gambling problem etc.
Some people are just plain self destructive. There are a handful of people that I know that are the type of people that after their deaths you say to yourself, "You could see it coming".
Thank god, I am normally grounded when it comes to this. I have a few drinks on the weekend now and have no desire for anything else. I haven't been blackout drunk since my early college years.

Sad to hear about family members itt. I remember another former colleague who broke his hip after falling down a flight of stairs. Was about that time we found out he was a big booze hound. He was also going through a divorce and his ex wife was nabbed for embezzling at her job. His skin looked sun burned from all the broken blood vessels. He also ended up in the hospital for a collapsed lung from yelling, can only imagine alcohol was a factor. After I moved on, heard through the grapevine he was with a new woman that seemed to be a positive influence in his life. One day I decided to look at obits and saw his name, and it read "died after a fall in his home. " Can only imagine he was under the influence again.

Very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

Some of the Irish kids I went to school with. Idk if it's genetic or something but when they drank their eyes would glaze over and they'd want to sexually assault chics and fight every dude they came in contact with.

Guy my parents grew up with, he had a Sunday morning tv talk show in the late 70’s. He drank himself to death. I can remember mid 80’s seeing him lying on the ground outside the corner store wasted off his ass, pissy wet. r.i.p. Jody.

My buddy from hs. We partied alot for years after hs. He just got his third dui last year. Just spent 6months in jail and lost his license for 10 years.
Don't talk to him anymore cause I just don't really have any respect for him.

21 year old me was working at a beer distributor. Every single day the same dude who was wheelchair bound would come in and shoot the chit for like 20 minutes then buy two 30 packs of bud light. This happened EVERY OTHER DAY for about a year. He never told us if he was paralyzed or what but over time he got sicker and sicker looking to the point I didnt feel comfortable selling him alcohol and the management agreed. We always asked if he was ok this and that. Always just a yeah. 30 beers a day for a year straight

My mother's biological father became an alcoholic after he served in Vietnam. Never met him, but I've seen pictures and heard stories. Apparently it runs in the family...
