there is an "authentic mexican" restauraunt here (that has been here for decades and now plays second fiddle to all the actual mexican restauraunts we have now) and their food is weird. I ordered chicken tacos and got chick and dumpling tacos or some BS.

It totally depends on exactly what Mexican food and where, regionally , you're at.
IMO Mexican food from southern New Mexico is hands down the best. It differs greatly from what you'll find in northern New Mexico and ari zona or Colorado and in Mexico.
I've tried some in LA before and wasn't impressed at all.
I think the best is usually homemade since I live in Colorado and most around me is okay or bad but never great.
Also depends on what you grew up eating.

Last Mexican I had in the uk, it was chicken covered in chocolate. Absolutely vile, the worse thing I have ever eaten by a fukkin margin.

I'll admit I could probably find a taco I wouldn't object to, but then if I want spicy it's curry every time for me. Heat, but flavour too..

Lucky for me I live in DC where Jose Andres has 5 banging mexican/south american restaurants. I had a cricket taco from Oyamel once that was pretty banging; the rest is to die for.

Tex-Mex is better then 'authentic' Mexican food. I think when most people ITT talk about how they love taco's or Mexican food they are thinking of a highly Americanized version of it.


The simple truth is most Mexican's are poor. Their food is primarily designed around cheap cuts of meat and trying to stretch basic ingredients as far as possible. If you go to super authentic places, especially those that primarily cater to Hispanic people. The prices are cheap and the quality of food usually will match that. Occasionally you find an exception to the rule however.
