We don't own any property right now, just paying rent for a studio apartment which is cheap, but its cramped, tight on space, and we cant raise a kid in it.
We have our budget down, every dollar allocated and has a purpose.
Degree is in business management, peddled to me by high school teachers and counselors, and businessmen that came to high school and promised prosperity if you go to college, get an internship, get a degree, and you will have a good path after.

In reality, the answer is move away from the city we both work in to a more affordable location, but the tradeoff is an hour commute every morning and night.

Otherwise, work 10-12 hours a day and sometimes weekends.

Marry someone else making 50k a year. Combine finances, go into debt to buy a home in the suburbs and raise little johnny while you live frugally and hope government doesn’t cut social security by the time you retire. Not the life for me, but the majority of Americans do it

If you have to “budget” and carefully plan your spending like you own a business just to afford a child, you can’t afford one in the first place IMO

Plenty of people have kids that cant afford it........that's why, as a single healthy male I don't see 22% of my check and an additional 5% of my income goes to paying for insurance that I don't even use.

How does child care neutralize your wife's paycheck. I had a nanny when my kids were young, it's like 12-15 per hour for them to watch 2 kids, and you can take a 6K deduction on your taxes for child care.

Does your wife make 12-15 per hour?

Anyway, it gets easier when they go to school, child care expenses go way down.

That's not the way taxes work. Reaching a higher tax bracket only effects the incremental income above that threshold. There are very rare circumstances where you might earn enough to disqualify you from a certain deduction and the net impact is negative, but in 99% of cases earning more won't net you less.

One solution then is to move somewhere cheaper to live then. 500k where I'm at will buy you 6 bed 5 bath on a half acre at least. you can get a 4bd 3bath for 210k and possibly less if you want to put some work into it. You can easily raise a child on 70k/year and have the wife stay home.

If OP really wants kids then he just has to make the sacrifices to do so. It's not brain science. If you want something you don't/can't have you have to sacrifice some or all of your current comfortableness.

OP the main thing for kids if you have good health insurance thru your job or a company than the rest is not very expensive. I have a 15 month old and he has more than he needs regarding clothes, toys, best snacks/food and you get 3-5k back in your tax return also or help towards your taxes. Private school in my area ( Cali ) that cost about 800-900 a month which is the only expensive part.

Its good you want your kid to have a good life, but lets be real there are plenty of kids that cost almost nothing to their parents other than food and clothes, its all perspective on what quality of life you're comfortable giving. If you want to do it perfectly you'll have to hold off until you are above middle class and have a ton of disposable income.

However, there isn't a reason you couldn't just pop out a kid and struggle through life paycheck to paycheck either. Its just how "much" are you willing to sacrifice to get that kid, it seems like you are not at a place in life where you want a kid enough to pass on being fiscally responsible later in life.

That's where I am at personally, I'd rather not procreate at all and guarantee a comfortable life in my adulthood, than create another life I'm supposed to somehow afford for 25 plus years; it may be selfish but I really don't give a rats ass if my gene pool continues, would rather have lambo on moon.

What do you do now, what would you get your master's in, and why would it take you 4 years to do it?

What is the year, make, and model of the cars you and your wife drive? Unless they're older Toyota Corollas or Civics, you are not doing nearly as much as you could be to be saving money.


Have a vision for your life. Figure out what your goals are, and DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO ACHIEVE THEM.
