I was booking a flight on SW when that came on the news. I usually sit near the wing because the engine noise helps me sleep, guess I won't be doing that anymore...

The engine didn't "blow" in the way you're referring to. The fan disk was missing a blade. Literally any pilot who heard the news assumed this within seconds.

The incident started with the fan blade failure, and for it to blow out the front cowl in totality like that would have required bouncing around in front of the fan disk, and I'm not seeing anything in pics that indicates this (no marks on the inside of the cowling, no gouges in the other blades, etc.) I think another possibility is that something else blew out the cowling as I've heard speculation of a pressure surge in the deicing system, but I don't know if that's actually possible when ingesting debris at full power FOD'd the missing blade. In that case, the blade broke and the fan lost balance, that would have destroyed the cowling.

Most likely, the fan blade came off, which caused the whole engine to shake violently, which caused the cowl to break apart, and the shrapnel from the cowl is what hit the window and weakened it. Then the window was no longer able to hold the pressure so it burst.

But what do I know, I'm just a woman.

Good stuff! Now if only millions of women would follow suit and realize the the skies the the limit (literally in this case) stop doing pep rallies about oppression and be the change they wanna see, this wouldnt be such a shocker that, god forbid, a women is an amazing pilot. She derserves any and all praise as would any pilot imo.

But that would require effort, ability and discipline. It's much easier to sit in your PJs eating Hagen Dazs and bitch on social media.

Yes she deserves the exact same praise as any other pilot would. Performance is the only thing that matters. No special treatment, and if you can perform at a set standard then that's great. I mean as soon as I saw she was female I ran about 100 simulations of typical thoughts from all sides. Meanwhile I was here just caring about the actual story.

So who is taking the wrap for the metal fatigue in the engine (I assume either the rotor or the drive itself)?

Metal fatigue is due to wear over long periods of time which would be visual and should fail some inspection criteria, or it wasn't quite at the visual point of fatigue and something drastic occurred which exceeded the lower metals tensile or yield strength and caused failure.

Did they say which? Both should be preventable either through turn down and part replacement or doing something the right way during operation.

Kudos to the pilot regardless of the genitalia. I'm sure the feminists will push her hard but I bet she's just looking at it as a pilot, male or female.

Well just like anyone else on that job, she has gone through all sorts of possible situations and handled the real life situation just like by the book. It's great that people still do their job properly and don't let emotions take over.
