I watched HLNs five part series on the GSK a couple weeks ago. It was really good. Can't believe they caught him, unreal. Blew my mind hearing how he got away so many times.

They obtained DNA from his trash and matched it to the DNA in the original evidence.

Just because it's inadmissible doesn't mean it has no investigative value to find evidence which is admissible.

Officers have been gathering DNA off cigarette butts in public garbage cans, interrogation room chairs, and drinking glasses to confirm suspicions for years. You leave it in plain view everywhere you go and put more of it on the curb in your garbage every week.

Here, they just used a relative's records, probably somebody who downloaded the raw data from legitimate secure tools and submitted it to a sketchy third-party tool, to figure out who to build the case against.

REALLY recommend it to anyone interested in true crime. Can be pretty disturbing/graphic so listeners discretion is advised.

These companies definitely sell their DBs. It's how they really make their money.

What happened was some relative of his sent in their DNA and it matched enough to alert detectives. They looked at the genealogy to find probable suspects. Once they drew him in their sights they collected his DNA profile from his trash. Obviously confirmed it was him from evidence left behind.

Will check this out later, I tried listening to Last Podcast On the Left serial killer podcasts but couldn't get past 20 minutes, full of unfunny obnoxious jokes it's practically unlistenable.

Crazy they finally caught him after all these years. I just watched a show on these killings about a month or two ago.

The other takeaway is yeah, fukkkkkkkkkkk giving your DNA to any of these stupid sites. Even non serial killer/rapers should see the potential intrusion of privacy and risk of having someone able to match your DNA or clone you at some point in the future...

So the local NBC DC affiliate did a story on this privacy issue today. Cliffs were that 30 something warrants were issued to the company 23 and me last year for DNA, so they complied. It is true that they compared a family member's dna to the suspects trash and were able to wrap up the case using it. The question to ask yourself is, is the predictive future health benefits that you learn from testing, worth alleviating your fears that you are in a database?

For the record one of my family members is using it in conjunction with his doctors to solve a problem.

Yeah srs but naw I never met him. To clarify - it was about .5 miles down a major street that ran right behind my neighborhood to his (the house in all the news videos). He lived there for decades.

I grew up next to where he committed alot of his attacks. Google "Cold Case Earons", that site has details on each one. Not gonna link because the details are very explicit and don't want thread delete.

Yeah I heard once the cops suspected Deangelo - they surveilled his home and took trash to gather DNA evidence. This was all in the last month.

As for the DNA records - I know police can demand stuff from internet or phone companies and most of the time they will comply. I think when they don't comply it can become a major story, like the FBI–Apple encryption dispute.

Here’s the house I lived next to where one of the double murders happened. The barn house, was red at the time. I think the big double windows is the master.

Then after he killed them he allegedly ran to a creek about 100yards behind the house and disappeared into the creek. Pictured is the bridge by the house and the creek.

There was also another murder on the bridge about 5-10 years ago. Guy was selling a pound of weed. Buyers tried to rob him and he pulled a gun a blew ones head off.
