Sad thing to see. When I was in HS, their was a wide variety of music that people liked. Now it's either hip hop or EDM chit.


I wasted a lot of time on guitar growing up. I still have an electric guitar and a bass guitar. Both are just sitting there doing nothing really.
plenty of good instrument based music still out there. but i agree with you, much less than there was say 20 years ago. short attention span of kids coupled with lack of time and desire to learn an instrument plus garbage like migos being a top act = death of rock music.

now, this doesn't have a lot to do with Gibson; reasons for its failure were already shown above and this was in the works for years, but it sure didn't help.

i own an sg with p90's....always thought it sounded kind of dead. yes, bought at gc about a decade ago. my least played instrument.

Honestly when you think about it, manually hitting strings on a piece of wood is retarded and primal.. Why do that when I can fire up Logic Pro and a bunch of $200 VSTs and have the power to create a full orchestra in my room?
Vibrato, bending and dynamics are important I guess but soon it'll be indistinguishable.. I don't get how drummers are still a thing, I just bought Superior Drummer a few months ago and quickly learned it and now I can easily make sickening drum lines that you can barely tell were made on a computer..
This is coming from a guy that has been playing guitar for most of his life

I've heard some decent sequenced grooves, but even pros can't seem to capture the dynamics, variations, and ghost notes of a good session drummer. Simpler beats can be programmed pretty convincingly, but some of the better examples out there are actually real drummers playing vDrums.

Still have yet to hear convincingly good VST guitar.

So like the majority of popular music today? Those rap dudes don't do chit, they play a backing track and even have pre-recorded vocals while they mumble some chit every now and then.. Once those older bands that actually play their instruments die off then it's fuked.. Even rock bands nowadays don't really rely on guitar that much, people barely play solos anymore outside of metal..
Metal is fuked as well, those really amazing prog bands that are masters at their instruments literally lose money when they tour..

There are some ok sounding VST guitars for simple rhythms, but you're right, stringed instruments are usually very hard to emulate..

anyways, it's a shame, but it's been a WIDELY discussed thing that Gibson's quality control went out the window YEARS ago, I'm talking nearly two decades ago. Can't really say the same about Fender, so not sure what's up there. Guitar Center? That place has been a joke for years. I remember just killing time in those stores, looking at chit I knew had a 40% mark up compared to online retailers even way back then... I would seriously wonder to myself "Do people ACTUALLY buy chit here aside from strings, or winders, or something?"

Online retailers are definitely the deathblow for a majority of brick and mortar stores, so it's not surprising. As for guitars themselves, there are so many more brands out today than before, making incredible pieces for substantially less amounts. There are new luthiers popping up daily online that put out quality chit, fully customized, and for a fraction of the price of some major brands. Shoot, a guy from my old jiu jitsu gym took it up as an experiment with his dad, and really got it down to an art. Now they are taking legit full blown orders for their pieces.

not surprised you can feel how cheap they are now vs holding one of the old ones.

my tregan is still my favorite guitar but they moved manufacturing to china so apparently they're chit now too.

looks like ibanez is still holding strong as the best bang for your buck

hopefully it just weeds out all the talentless *******s as they all move to computers.

EDM as a music genre is just a fad like everything else but computers are just getting too good at emulating real instruments. i make music on the computer but i still need my guitar and keyboarf to play the music; the computer just allows me to then make my guitar sound like any other instrument i want.

On the advice of miscers I bought a PRS guitar and been loving it since. Looked at comparable Gibson models and they were 50% more.

lmao poor dude, if you ever get to hold one from pre 90's they feel absolutely incredible, I never liked how they played but you could just feel the quality even after it had been played heavily for years

Er instrumentals aren't going anywhere lol. If you just watch MTV and listen to mainstream radio then yeah, you're not going to hear much. Nothing will replace true mastery of an instrument(s) to compose a song. There are more options for guitars than ever, the competition is a lot tougher.

I see this a lot online, but i own a 2012 les paul studio and a 2013 sg standard and both are top notch in quality. Gibson isnt going out of busiiness, the CEO just made some mistakes buying useless brands and heading in the wrong direction. Their guitar division is still highly profitable. I dont even expect any super deals to come from this. As far as guitar center, it will be the same as any other business liquidation, they will have sales from 10% up to 30% off starting a few weeks before closing (after crazy price markups), then they will backdoor all of the super deals to employees and wholesale distributors. I walked into an HH Gregg a day before they went under, and they had TVs marked literally THOUSANDS over Amazon prices. Same with Circuit City, I know how that game is played.

Haven’t been serious about playing guitar since high school but Gibson has always been my favorite. Crazy to think that Gibson and fender(arguably the two most played brands) are hurting right now.
