Told uni that I was interdasted in a Co-op the next semester (1 week away), they hooked me up with interviews. Interviewed, got a call back within an hour, got the Co-op. Graduated about a year later, landed my career same place ezpz

It can be really tough making inroads into something new. The biggest success I've accomplished came from looking at my past experiences, and presenting it to employers in a different way.

I walked into the recruiter's office and said "I want to join the Air Force" and...

Was drinking high life one night and decided to apply.

Went better than expected. No connections and no real good experience.

Got a “no thank you” email from their HR, but got called by the hiring manager the next day lol

Buddy said they were hiring at his tradie factory job so I put in an application, made sure to leave out my 2 college degrees and left out my previous job in Quality control and left on my part-time job as a server.

needless to say I finally figured out how to get a job. Been at that sh!tty (but good-paying) job for 3 years now.

Was at a crossroads at 20 years old. Was not going to school and facing either continuing to be miserable working 9-5 for $10 per hour or joining the military. Figured I didn't have anything to lose taking one more shot at the job market, so I applied for a drafting position with a local engineering firm. They liked my enthusiasm and hired me. Now I'm a BIM manager at the same place. One of the best decisions of my life, srs.

I took a lower paying contract job just to get my foot in the door. Took 2.5 years but proved myself and got hired on salary. Work on your resume and sell yourself in the interview, they want to know what you bring to the table.

Why would you whine about $12/hour as a first job in the 90s? That was pretty good back then.

Been working for my job for 3 years as part time, and was on the eligibility list for a full-time benefited position. A full-time employee in my ideal department left so I contacted the supervisor and said I can help fill the work gap since she left....two days later of me working extra hours as part-time he offered me the full-time job.

Got my current job completely cold (no inside reference), applied with resume on the Hospital's own job listing/application section on their website. I think that was key.

What I mean is, I have never got an interview, email or even a call from posting my resume on a large job listing site. I have never met anyone who did either. It's a fukin joke. Your resume is lost in a sea of other countless resumes.

Nobody wants to help you. I can’t rewind my like 10 years and build a strong network at this point.

Networking might help you years from now but it doesn’t help you today.

It’s too long of a process building that relationship for someone to want to go out of their way to help you.

It’s something that can pay off in the long run, but it’s completely useless advice for people who need a job now if that network isn’t already built.

Not trying to be negative. I dont have a good network and that’s on me 100% but I can’t magically create one for tomorrow either.

Just being realistic in that sense. Working on building your network is great long term advice but that’s not really gonna help me currently.
You're pretty much correct.

I don't know when people started telling college students and recent graduates that networking was the key to getting a job, but they're retarded.

Networking is something that comes from socializing with work contacts. The only time that might come into play with a recent grad is internships, but that's really more a situation where you're just begging for a job from the company that provided you the internship to begin with.

Networking gets you a job in the future. It's worthless for getting a job right now.Especiallyif you don't have any experience. You're not getting someone dropping your name to their colleagues like "Oh man, I know this guy with a brand new degree and no experience, he'll be perfect for you!"

No, instead, it's "Hey, I worked with Jimbo on a joint project 5 years ago. That guy really knows his stuff, we should poach him for our company because he's smart as hell."

All i see is excuses.. Not trying to be mean, but networking works! You don't even have to be friends with them for 6 months! Not even 3! Sure, if you purely want to use them as a reference, you will have to build up trust. But you also hear about job opportunities through meeting new people. It sounds like you have given up..or just do not know how to use the resources around you. I got my job by walking a large strip center and applying at EVERY store, just happened to get lucky because one of the places was a hotel that started me off playing 4$ more than my previous job. Also got that one by just walking in and applying. Smiling helps! got hired on the spot for both just because of my personality.

1. Already had a job, but was not happy.
2. Had a complete LinkedIn Profile and updated resume.
3. Turn on the "Let recruiters know you are open" option on LinkedIn. Used other sites like indeed and glassdoor, but found most success with LinkedIn.
4. Constant contact from recruiters. Have my pick of a new job.
5. Phone interviews followed by in-person interviews with interesting prospects.
6. Leverage multiple offers to increase salary/benefits.
7. Profit.

Key is to be a desirable candidate (aka possess skills that are in demand) in a growing field.

EDIT:What field are you in, OP? Maybe I can help you out.
