How did you land your current job?

So I’ve been applying for 10 months and have had no luck

I want to hear stories how you got your job. Maybe it can give me a different idea to approach this

As detailed you can be would be great.

Things I’ve tried:
1. Asking friends for job recommendations where they work for positions I could do
2. Mass applying through job sites
3. Finding recruiters on LinkedIn and messaging
4. Connecting with people who have similar jobs I want on LinkedIn and asking to speak about their responsibilities and the company they work for etc
5. Applying in person to places I see posted online
6. Reaching out to recruiting agencies for help
7. Job fairs (don’t even bother)
8. Stretched my skills on resume variations to as many different fields as I could

All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

I knew generally where I wanted to work. I went to the companies website and applied for any applicable job opening.
Got a call a week or two later asking if I'd be interested in an interview. Did the interview, which was scheduled for am hour and lasted half of that. It was the hiring manager and an hr person.
I got an offer the next week.

I knew which companies to apply.for since my dad works in the same industry but for a different company, so I have heard which organizations treated employees well and were the desirable places to be.

When I was going through my divorce and looking for full time jobs with benefits, the director and owner of the rescue wrote me a wonderful recommendation letter, one of the other volunteer staff members did my resume and I reached out to all my dog rescue friends on FB. Sent a message to them telling them I was going through a divorce and needed a full time job with benefits and detailed my previous work experience. One of them had been working at the company I now work at for many years and she turned my resume in. 2 interviews later and i had the job. I was very lucky in knowing someone with so much clout. It's a great company and I'll be celebrating 5 years in Oct. If it hadn't been for volunteering with the rescue I don't know how long it may have taken me to find a good job. My best advice is expand your social circles. The more people you know, the more options may be out there.

I dont have a job, I have a career.

Spent 5 long, grinding years learning screenwriting and devouring aspects of the film making biz.
Finally got hired to write a script for a producer last year, and now working a deal to produce my own film in Fall.
It was worth every bit of difficulty.

So if you knew in 5 years things would completely turn around, how much would you push for that goal?

Srs tho, I got mine through an Industry Night type deal hosted by the program I took at college. But grads from my program were in really high demand in general, every single person I graduated with who wanted a job in this line of work had one lined up prior to graduating

Guy I had worked with on a project approached me and said they were looking for someone to fill the job.

Job prior to that was because my wife mentioned my experience to a manager and he sought me out. Additionally someone I worked with was close family friends with the manager, which made for a good 2nd reference.

Prior to that, it was essentially applying to anything and everything.

I applied off of indeed. I hired a resume writing company and it worked wonders, received many responses compared to when I used one that I wrote.

100$ well spent.

Also, typically the better the job you're looking for the longer it's going to take. At least from my experience.

You did a PhD and you didn't mention an alumni network? If your school is half-decent they should at least have someone keeping people posted on job opportunities from alumni or school connections. Don't be afraid to get in touch with people you don't even know personally if you have that alma meter connection; grads are usually happy to help others. If you don't have much of a social circle or networking skills, this is a nice workaround.

You also need to focus more on jobs that are good fits for your background so you can dedicate more time tailoring your reusme + cover letter. If you aren't checking off the keywords and convincing what you bring to the table is what the job requires, your odds of getting a callback are basically 0.

Also, assuming you're applying for entry level jobs, employers will see that you have a PhD, meaning that relative to say, undergrads, you will probably ask for a higher wage and be more likely to find another job better suited for your education level. Over-qualification can be a turnoff.

I used a lot of selective wording and hyperbole on my resume. Plausible deniability.

Also, someone hooked me up with an interview and I prepped for it for days. I got a job as a communication major (IT Security Sales) so anyone can do it.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to network more.

I’ve never understood this phrase. Am I supposed to waste my time going to bars to make friends for 6 months and hope one of them hooks me up or something?

I already try to connect through LinkedIn and that doesn’t work.

Nobody wants to help you. I can’t rewind my like 10 years and build a strong network at this point.

Networking might help you years from now but it doesn’t help you today.

It’s too long of a process building that relationship for someone to want to go out of their way to help you.

It’s something that can pay off in the long run, but it’s completely useless advice for people who need a job now if that network isn’t already built.

Not trying to be negative. I dont have a good network and that’s on me 100% but I can’t magically create one for tomorrow either.

Just being realistic in that sense. Working on building your network is great long term advice but that’s not really gonna help me currently.

Couldn't disagree more with this. College Job fairs are the key to getting a first job. Also college career counselor. I got several interviews from job fairs and then got my actual job through the career center on campus.

This was more so accounting recruiting night though and not your typical job fair. But most schools let alumni in also so I would give it a shot.

Edit: Nvm saw you have phd....not necessarily good for a job fair seeing as you would the the most educated one in the room lol. I would ask people you done your phd with and your academic supervisors/thesis supervisor etc.

I also got a chit job at a startup that paid barely anything and probably was violating a few labor laws. Point being though, employers want to hire someone whop already has work.
