We are refraining from food and water but let us not forget we should refrain from listening to things we shouldn't listen to saying things we shouldn't say and see things we shouldn't see. Also don't gorge yourself when you break fast that defeats the whole purpose. I lost 20 lbs last Ramadan hopefully I lose at least 10 lbs this time.

I hope to do the same as your bolded.

Insha'Allah, it will go well. One trick is to drink a couple glasses of water at Iftar with your date. Then go read Maghrib. By the time you've done praying, the water has hit your stomach - taking away the intensity of your hunger which helps in not overeating.

You're actually allowed to have sex after the fast in the night. “It is made lawful for you to have sexual relations with your wives on the night of As‑Sawm (the fasts). They are Libaas [i.e. body-cover, or screen, or Sakan (i.e. you enjoy the pleasure of living with them)] for you and you are the same for them. Allaah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you (accepted your repentance) and forgave you. So now have sexual relations with them and seek that which Allaah has ordained for you (offspring), and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall.”

You can go to the website of your local mosque and pull down a Ramadan calendar. It will tell you the fast begin time and the end time along with the prayer times.

It's very similar to intermittent fasting which many athletes do. However, it's not only about not eating or drinking from sun up until sun down. It's so much more than that.

You're supposed to refrain from any sexual physical stuff, you can't smoke or put anything into your body. Giving to charity and devoting your time to the worship of God is key. That's the true intention of this month.
yea, I know but I plan on doing this mostly for the weight loss, discipline and health

Thanks for the heads up, brb buying bullet proof vest. I serve subpoenas/repo stuff/general lawbrah and violence always skyrockets in this period.

Good luck to all of you. Imagine working at a juicy fast food joint as a practising muslim now. Fuk.

I worked at Taco Hell as a teenager and observed Ramadan. My lil nephew in high school is working at KFC currently and observes Ramadan.

It's no different than bodybuilders/athletes who are disciplined in their diets. Anyone can do it. The great thing about this though is the entire community observing with you.

Respect to OP who seems to saying the fast is merely a small piece of the point of the experience, in addition to spiritual stuff, prayer and clean living.

Honestly most of my experience in the past has been participants sharing how they beat the fast or technically adhere while still eating big which made it seem pointless to me.

Good luck to the Muslim miscers participating

It should always be by the nearest masjid to you. congrats on the marriage, last time I've seen your posts ages ago, I don't think you were in a relationship.

they do this in Saudi, when I was there a lot of people call it the Saudi fasting. staying up and sleeping throughout the day, some do it and just wake up to pray and go back to sleep until sunset so they can break "fast".

I notice, at the time of this posting, the thread is rated 2-stars. Strong passive-aggressive fuktardery.

Anyway, as a non-Muslim who is into water fasting, I always thought the no-drinking during sun hours and breaking the fast at night was odd, but I've looked into dry fasts, which some people do (same as water fast but, obviously, no drinking water, sometimes avoiding showering and such) and there might just be some accelerated benefits of dry fasting over water fasting (for short periods, obv, not drinking can end you quick if you just stop).

So, I thought it was pretty cool overall. Dry fasting intermittently for a full month probably has some awesome health benefits, I'm curious if there have been any unbiased studies that have looked into this.

edit: Looking over the thread, Jesus folks. Yeah - **** radical Islam, I agree, but can we for once talk about Islam without going there? Don't get me wrong, yes - the radical extremists are ****ing evil and barbaric, no argument, but I can only imagine how bored I'd get if every time I spoke about my Christian faith, *everyone* immediately went bonkers about nutcase radicals like the Westboro Baptists.

Can we just discuss Ramadan and move on, maybe?

I've never heard of dry fasting, meaning abstaining from even showering.. lol I can't do that. I don't eat, drink, nor smoke during the time of fasting. Showering, brushing teeth, and the likes, I do.

Shower 2/day crew here. I've never tried dry fasting, I usually drink lots of water, as such I don't hold a lot of water and dehydrate very fast. I went in to get some blood work done, only drank a cup of coffee in the morning, nurse had to stick me twice, said I was extremely dehydrated, I'm guessing b/c I'd just skipped drinking in the morning.

... anyway, dry fasting is supposed to speed up the effects of auto****y, which is one of the main reasons I do them (I'm not a fatty looking for a quick-fix to overeating like some fasters). I may try one some day, but Summer in Texas is near and 100+ days with no drinking seem like a dangerous proposition and no-showering is out of the question. I might take it easy some weekend and see if I can go a day and a half or so dry. Likely, never more than that (even though I've water-fasted for 10 days once). My gut instinct is, I'll break it after 1/2 day or so.

I can do without food easily, it's the water that I struggle dealing with. Terrible temper ATM, dealing with a lot of problems at work and the pressure from customers who can't let me deal and figure out the problem calmly is even more frustrating.

Alhumdulillah, yes, thank you. We got married fast. about 7 months from the day we met. You know how it goes amongst Muslims. Quick nuptials.

This wouldn't work for Muslims as we're required to make ablution 5 times a day for prayer which includes water.

Do it and report back! You'll be like Batman (a stinky one).

I think the first couple days will be the hardest, after that it's smooth sailing.

Yea, the not-eating is the easy part believe it or not. And thank you.

.....

This month: Muslims are required to give approximately 2.5% in charity - Zakah (that's a minimum) of their cumulative assets to those in need each year. Many Muslims choose Ramadan to do this giving to maximize the brownie points from God.

Fyi, replying to your message you sent (with the green, thanks)...

Texans aren't the type to get hot and bothered about other cultures. We're a solid mix of cultures as it is, with strong Hispanic influences and a lot of major cities with massive diversity. I see Muslims out and about all the time, there are several at my kid's kindergarten and nobody cares. I live in one of the most conservative cities in Texas (won't give out name, but it took a little getting used to moving up from Austin). My wife is non-white, strong Lebanese mix (and looks it), we don't get hassled or experience *******ry save the very, very rare occasion.

While there might be a little culture shock, people asking about where you're from and whatnot, being a Muslim or from Syria or whatever won't negatively impact you living in Texas, beyond maybe the very rare instance of some dumbass redneck mouthing off. We're generally very friendly, very cool and very accommodating.

I think some of the miscer brahs can help you out here (non-Muslims and Muslims alike), but I would say - eat a lot of mixed nuts, fatty steak and veggies cooked in grass-fed butter!

Are you clean bulking? I think if you had a massive meal at iftar, then go for taraweh, come back and have some snacks/fruit - go to sleep and then have another massive meal, you might be okay. 3000 cals really isn't that much.

Milk with almonds + vanilla ice cream - blended = a good snack for bulking.

You can start by going to the doctor and having them remove about 3/4 of your massive belly.

When we were kids, we would get excited about fasting - so our parents helped us keep "bird fasts" - meaning do the fast for as long as possible during the day. Each day, increasing it by some time. It helped prepare us for the real deal.

But like any other diet, fasting is mind over matter.

For you, I'd say drink clear liquids for the fasting window - then eat clean foods during the feeding window. Slowly/gradually teach yourself to fast like a boss (aka, me).

Can confirm, was in Texas the weekend before last. I find that Texans aren't in-your-face polite like Californians (at least the parts I've been to), nor are they rude, racist or bigoted as perceived. Most just keep to themselves, but if you ask them for help, they're very outgoing and will help any way they can. We had several convos with the locals when we were there, it was cool.
