Money management/financial literacy is arguably the most important thing a person can learn yet is not taught at all in school.

All part of the rigged system to keep the peasants peasants (nosocialist)

It is up to the individual to educate themselves on such matters but as most people are morons they don't.

People are dumb and choose to live paycheck to paycheck. My coworkers make decent money, they could save if they wanted, but I always hear them say "I'll buy it when I get paid on friday"

You can get a 0% interest loan from any number of banks if you are ever furloughed.

Government employees earn more on average anyways than the private sector average, much more when you look at those with no college degrees or high school diplomas.

It's hardly a burden, it just screws up your vacation plans for the time being.

?!?!

We have a hard time retaining employees. Private Sector takes them once they get a number of years under their belt. We simply can't match the pay. We entice them with benefits, which is why it's easier for us to retain older, family-orientated employees. Our family healthcare, holiday, sick leave/FML, and retirement is solid.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.

It only starts to tip the other way with advanced degrees, and tbh, they should be able to get a job just about anywhere.

The unions always come up with studies showing wage gaps with federal employees down 30%+, but they never take into account education or experience, or they heavily weight places like San Francisco where $100k barely makes ends meet.

I think the worst part about the misc is how it has zero sympathy for people almost all the time.

The problem with this is that even if somebody had savings they would be forced to use them through no fault of their own.

I have a decent amount of money saved up.

I would be very upset if my job told me "Hey man, how about you fuk off for an undisclosed amount of time while our upper management debates whether or not we add a wall to the building."

I mean, what about people with kids/families they have to take care of? Then what?

"Hurr durr. Find another job!"

But that's real easy for you to say when you're not the one dealing with it. Easier still when you don't consider what exactly that would be asking them to do considering that jobs don't exactly fall off the job tree when EVERYONE is looking for a job. Some of these people ARE working a second job as it is.

Jeez guys.

Our government fails us when it plays with it's people's livelihood in order to settle policy.

Eh, this just shows what people make with similar degrees which really doesn't prove your statement. I want to see the comparison between similar jobs

depends what part of the industry you are looking at and location.

my line of work for example is kind of like an ops research analyst; i'm up there on the GS pay scale but private sector work equivalency can be wishy wash as it depends on the industry and the market. based on the level of work i do, i'd say i'm short changing myself by staying govt. i know a few senior guys that left DoD to work at research firms and their salary is about 20-50k more than what i'm making.

if you look at ITs for example, most ITs are in the GS-9 to 12 level, which isnt much when you compare them to their civilian counterparts. my last command was losing ITs left and right because it's hard to compete for talent when you have silicon valley businesses paying 25-50k more that what we could offer. more if they have a high level clearance

overall, somethings are inherently govermental and difficult to find a private sector counterpart. rule of thumb is that if it's not inherenly govt type job, it's outsourced via contracts. often times contracts cost more than what it would cost to pay a civil service employee.

No, you're not alone, but you are among the minority. I think most people know they're supposed to save for emergencies but just don't. Mostly because most people live past their means. I was talking to my brother the other night about his situation - he's in the Coast Guard and isn't getting paid. He's been trying to talk lately about investing and building wealth and putting money in the market, which is all great and a wonderful idea, but they're still struggling because he's been putting what he did have in savings into his investments and had next to nothing in cash. Most people don't have the discipline to live on less than they make and then put the rest away, and if they do wind up with anything left over after bills think it should all be fun money towards toys or entertainment, etc. I don't understand it.

Most have covered January rents/bills, etc, but February is looming. Food, utilities, child-care.. they don't care if you are on furlough from the gov't. You rarely get a break. Mortgage companies *may* do something like lay off the late-fees, but they don't give you a free month of rent or mortgage.

True that furlough gov't employees will get back pay, but that doesn't help them out NOW.
None of what you said matters in regards to the OP. Whether someone is in management, TSA, shift manager, or whatever, they should be living responsibly within their means and saving for times like this.

The thing is they're all but guaranteed back pay. Yeah, they might use up a chunk of their savings to pay for the monthly bills, but once they get paid they can stick that money right back where it belongs and be in the same position had they not missed a paycheck.

So do you support a high min-wage or an expanded welfare safety-net? If one makes a standard federal min-wage... how does one "live within their means" if that in itself is unattainable? Minimum wage does not even pay rent in a lot of places, let alone utilities and food.
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.

A sad reality check.
It doesn't help that wages have been largely stagnant for 20+ years while costs keep rising. I'm doing well but know many people who don't live extravagantly and are more or less lucky to break even at the end of the year.

That's another big issue. I used to sell computers to the local army base. He would buy about $50k a year worth of stuff. A lot of it was needless junk and when I asked him why he bought so much crap he wouldn't use he said it was so he could justify next years budget. Our government in a nutshell.

I think that's fair, then.

It still sucks to have to front money for an emergency that wasn't your fault, but at least they get back pay.

Something like 70% of America is living paycheck to paycheck with less than $400.00 in savings. So much prosperity.

No. I'm for people learning how to manage their finances and spending habits. This is not a phenomenon unique to people making only minimum wage, or even low wages; many people making over $100k still can't figure out how to stop buying toys and winding up in debt instead of saving. People aren't supposed to expect to be able to raise a family on a single income minimum wage earner. These are the types of positions usually held by people still in school or living with their parents still, maybe making it by with a few roommates who are helping with bills, etc.

Not all cases, but primarily low IQ - inability to defer gratification.

It blows my mind that these same people living paycheck to paycheck often have new iPhones and other luxuries, before building an EF (emergency fund) and paying off high interest debt.
