AMazes me how many Federal Employees can't make it a month??
Doesn't ANYONE save these days in case of stuff like this?? It baffles my mind. I understand it's a bitch working without pay (especially for some of the military/coast guard) that won't receive a check. But i know some fed. employees and they make pretty good money. Christ, you watch some of the news and it's like Food Banks are running out helping, stories of people 'maybe' losing houses, not feeding kids etc. WTF...serious?? I was always raised to have at least 3 months saved to cover everything (mortgage, cars, food etc.) in case something happens. Am I alone in this?? Am I being idiotic or just too old school?

The majority of our society lives beyond their means, which means zero in savings.
A sad reality check.

Most people don’t save much.
The misc in an exception...7 years of rent/mortgage in checking alone...doesn’t include savings.

This is why we need to tax the rich at 70%.
Our federal employees are working their fingers to the bone to ensure we are accurately monitoring the population of long-proboscis mosquitos, and we can't even pay them enough to get by for a month.

It's not just federal employees, most of the population doesn't know wtfrack they're doing when it comes to managing their finances.
Everyone wants to keep up with the Joneses even though it's unrealistic for most.

BRB I am an extremely important government employee, my job is vital to a functioning government, and the U.S. will collapse if Trump doesn't stop holding out for the wall!
BRB I have literally enough money to live paycheck to paycheck and need to visit a food bank.

Most people couldn’t even cover a $400 emergency with cash.
Americans are over their heads in debt. Enjoying living in luxury (above their means) until their paychecks (much like a drug) stop suddenly. Then everything collapses

Personal responsibility is over buddy. Everyone deserves to spend every cent they can get their hands on now and if it doesn't work out they are a victim of corporations and capitalism. Two thirds of the people you pass in day to day life have spent all their future earnings for years.

Why does it amaze you? Most federal employees are terrible with money because they’re glorified welfare recipients. Certainly not all, but most.

Actually, a lot of federal workers don't make that much unless they are in upper management or in very specialized fields. Grunts on the front line of TSA or Coast Guard don't make much more than a shift-manager at your local fast-food joint.
What federal gov't jobs make for in pay is usually benefits, job security (unless there is a shut-down over egos), and a solid pension if you can make it 20-30 years.
Most have covered January rents/bills, etc, but February is looming. Food, utilities, child-care.. they don't care if you are on furlough from the gov't. You rarely get a break. Mortgage companies *may* do something like lay off the late-fees, but they don't give you a free month of rent or mortgage.
True that furlough gov't employees will get back pay, but that doesn't help them out NOW.

The problem is that the federal workforce has two extremes. There are a TON of people that are working low income jobs; janitorial services (mostly contracted, however), Homeland security, administrative staff, etc. There are also a lot of SES positions; these are the ones people always complain about that make up the bulk of the DC workforce. People equivalent to Generals/Admirals that mostly do things like "make policy."
SES'ers may get into financial trouble because they're trying to live beyond their means, but the reality is they make so much damn money that they should be okay.
The low income people I absolutely have sympathy for. They ARE probably overpaid compared to their civilian counterparts, but they're still not making a lot of money.
The people in the middle, the GS-9's to GS-13/14's or so, are people that have more white collar jobs but get dicked compared to if they were working for private industry. They're probably getting about 25% less pay than they would otherwise. They make decent middle class livings. More than likely they're chit at saving just because most Americans are. But that said, theyshouldhave an emergency fund. If they don't, it's their own fault. No sympathy for these people either.
Disclosure is that I'm a GS-12, but work for the DoD so I'm not furloughed. Ihavebeen furloughed twice in my career, however.

It's pathetic. Unless you just started your career less than a year ago, you should have 3-6 months of expenses saved. Minimum.
If you don't you are living beyond your means.
