OP we know you don’t make that kind of money, but I’ll play along.

Comfortable = $12k month net or $18k gross

Mid west city, no kids. No baller by any means, basic bachelor middle class lifestyle.

When you actually make 8-10k you find you blow through it WAY faster than you think. The expenses associated with making that money go up a lot.

Yep. I might catch some hate for this but honestly if you make under $10k per month gross you have no business having kids. A) you can’t afford them B) we don’t want your poverty genes spread. Srs.

10-12k/mo net is the sweet spot. Money for a nice house, nice cars, savings, vacations, etc. Cut back on a few niceties and your kids are in private schools, decent college, etc.

15-20k/mo net is where you're on a completely different level of living.


Of course if you live in a high COL chithole like LA or NYC, then bump those figures 25-50%.

My current 10 year goal is 10K passive income per month. I think that should be much more than comfortable.

Well i'd say about 350k/mo GROSS, so depending on the country/state you're in, I'd say that's roughly 10k/day net.

Anybody posting anything over $6k as a single male is delusional. A nice Condo $2000, A new BMW $800, Eating out 4x/wk $400. Vacations every summer $6000/year. That leaves you $2800 to save in the bank. That's more than comfortable. Of course it depends on where you live. Make it $10000 for a place like LA

About $3kish. I'd stay with my dad. House is paid off. Just need to make property taxes+utility+food+insurance+medical costs+some extra for maintaining home.

I'd want a lot more if I had my own family, but since I'm FA, I don't need much.

See there's a giant list of **** you've left out as far as expenses and that's the difference between real life and armchair budgeting.
Groceries
Utilities
Car Insurance
Home insurance
Disability Insurance
Life Insurance
Medical/Dental Insurance
Childcare
School fees/extra
TV/Internet
Student Loan
401k IRA etc
There's a bunch more - but all this will eat into that cushy 2800 and leave you living paycheck to paycheck. Also the cost of these things go up exponentially when you do make more. I pay through the nose for disability insurance - but it's vitally important.

If I took home 5 grand each month id pay all the bills a month early and play golf 4 times a month. I gross 5 grand though so living to pay bills.

$6,000 is about $110k before taxes. I've already account for health insurance/401k.

Car insurance already included with BMW $600 note $100 insurance + $100 in gas

At $110k salary I'm assuming school has been paid off way before then.

Don't get mad because I stated $10k to live comfortable is crazy. The average household income is what, $56k/ year. If you're making $4000 a month as a single male then you're ahead of the pack. If be very comfortable on $4000. Though it does depend on the city you live.

If I have no debt and own my home? $3,500 / month for me and my lady would be more than enough to be comfortable.

My hobbies are cheap though and tbh I don't care much for luxuries. I save over half income as it is because I don't need it all.

I also drive a $6,000 car and live in an apartment complex made mostly of middle class, blue collar people who make the median household income. Many, for whatever reason, aren't happy with that lifestyle.

12k sounds about right for pretty comfortable living. I could also downsize and survive on a 1/3 of that with relative ease.

Depends a lot on col. To be entirely honest it started as a joke, but currently thinking 350k is about where I want to be in the next few years (srs). Living comfortably is nice, but balling out is even better.

Yes you have extra funds to poor into investments/retirements, but the money still goes out the door.

Everyone has a different version of what's comfortable. And for the most part spending habits and money management will dictate that more so then anything else.

I'm incredibly comfortable taking home 4,000 per month. To the point where I want for nothing. With that said, I'm debt free aside from my mortgage which is below 25% of my net pay) and have low living expenses.


Ideally I'd like about 10-12k per month but that's just what I would like, not what's necessary to live an awesome life.

High cost of living area people can't really compare. You might make 100K per year in Canada but you probably have less money/toys then people that make 40K per year in some midwest or southern state in the US.
