Yep. We also need to be as welcoming as possible. Elitism and making fun of noobs is the quickest way to turn people off and make future political enemies when they could've been allies. The more gun owners out there the better we will be able to protect our rights

a couple months ago when I was outside with son a couple of the neighbor kids were playing basketball in the cul de sac. I got to shootin the chit with em and the 9 y/o is really into hunting with his dad and shot his first buck this year with a .308. His friend (12 y/o) that was there with him hinted that he was interested in shooting but his grandad can't take him (he is also my neighbor but his grandad and mom adopted him and his 4 brothers and sisters so obviously they don't have a lot of time or energy for extracurricular activities). I told him that I would take him shooting once the weather warms up a bit which is about time for me to follow through since it got warm here last week. I say all that to say that there are a lot of kids around that would love to learn about and shoot guns they just don't have the opportunity.

I'm a hunter myself but if I were you I'd get an AR first in this political climate. There is less than 0% chance that compound bow will be banned anytime soon, I don't mean to fear monger but you can't say the same about ARs

Palmetto State Armory is good for entry level ARs that are cheap and go bang with reasonable levels of accuracy. The good thing about ARs is they are like legos for grown ups. If you end up not liking the stock just replace it, same with grip, handguard, barrel, sights and muzzle device. Then after you replace all that just buy a new lower receiver and you have 2 ARs instead of one.

If you want to go with something nicer the Ruger in the OP is a really good deal. I didn't notice earlier but it has an upgraded trigger along with the nicer furniture. If you want some really Gucci chit LaRue and Geiselle I've heard excellent things about but Ikeman knows infinitely more about the high end stuff than I do

Depends on what you want it for. I don't have a lot of experience with AKs but my dad has a Saiga that has been extremely reliable for 20 years running cheap steel ammo. Right now ARs are the way better value

Ammo for AKs is cheaper but more dependent on foreign sources.

The quality of the gun for the price on an AR is much better right now, and the ability to mount optics/ light/ bipod /etc is much better.

Realistically looking for something 600-1000.

What are the things to stay away from (specs, material, proprietary stuff)

And specs/ material that are worth it and not fluff.

On an AR? Chrome lined or Nitrided 4150 barrel, 1:7 or 1:8 twist, HPT/MPI BCG, 8620 carrier, C158 or 9320 Bolt, and things like staking the gas key/castle nut. Is it free floated, carbine vs midlength gas.

PSA does things cheap but they'll run. The Ruger in the OP is actually a decent gun.

Already own one but just wanted your opinion
I picked up a Sig M400 Tread right when they came out. The gun store nearby had the first in the area and had a tax free sale so I ended up scooping it up.
What’s your opinion on them?
Have run a handful of mags through it with no issues and it’s my 1st AR. Good buddies brother picked up the longer version of the rifle in the Op and am debating on snagging another or just kidding mine.
