man do you see some of the ****en degenerates they trot out on the tv whining about the sheer indignity of being expected to pay to live in someone else's property?
like some other person should just buy a house or flat, invest money fixing it up, let you move in, and keep spending money to have **** fixed when it goes wrong, have the garden taken care of, and so forth?

Australia must be super poverty. Because for the month of April, 95% of Americans still paid their rent. On track for just about the same for May.
They said she's gone too far this time

Lol.
Maybe they will drop the interest rates to -10% so these “homeowners” don’t go bankrupt.
Housing? 100% dependent on interest rates...and right now they are 100% manipulated, which won’t last forever.

That’s why banks hold the title on mortgaged properties and can take possession and sell the property if mortgage isn’t paid.
What’s the problem?

idk man, government is out of money and people are out of work. so many broke homeowners are going to sell, but banks simply aren't going to lend to people who lost their income or are up their asses in debt.
I did get a pre-approval because of the piss low rates but I'm only buying if I see a good property selling well below pre-corona ask.

The government rarely evicts people, to begin with, they're completely useless. Don't pay rent pre covid19 and you could still enjoy a very lengthy period of free accommodation.
The renter will also have a hard time finding another place to live when his would-be landlord finds out he had to be evicted.

And are allowing people to capitalise the interest back into the loan
So tell me why owners of good properties are going to panic sell during a pandemic

Fundamentally, all you're doing is locating cheap /decrepit property and flipping them it for profit? probably on a street corner so you can also maximise the number of subdivisions.
That same practice is the root cause of old houses costing 1M+ in Sydney and the reason families move from properties with yards into shoebox apartments/flats.
Wouldn't be surprised if you're telling the taxman you live in these same properties for the prescribed period to avoid capital gains tax.

If the mortgagee is in possession most states and territories allow for termination
The bank will normally terminate to give vacant possession

The bottom line is that there's been major income loss across the population. A fair chunk of homeowners lost their income and will simply be forced to sell to make ends meet. Landlords who rent out their properties will see less rent going around and vacancy rates increasing, that will bring some of them underwater too. Because of the tourism and international education armageddon, investors and landlords holding homes for students, out-of-town workers and tourists are also in deep **** - their properties won't be generating anywhere the income they expected for the next several years, but they borrowed based on future income that will no longer be realized.
