Scary to think that actually happened. Stalingrad was a meat grinder.

In the grand scheme, I dont think it counts as one of the greats in the genre though.

Russian war movies make American war movies look like footage from the actual battles.

More of a movie about mental illness.
One look at the movie poster and even a low IQ idiot could tell you that.

I'm sure there were angry phone calls once the final cut was released.
Turned out to be Caviezel's.
The answer Malick gives is that when he was editing it, he "found" the film with the Caviezel character.
For people who don't understand the praise for TRL, watch it again. It's not really a war movie. It's not really even a philosophical character study.
It's a movie about something deeper.

It's a poetic movie. It's honestly something that Kurosawa could have made.
Which reminds me, any of you *******s who haven't seen Ran should make an effort to do so.

Far from perfect, shot with what are obviously re-enactors most of the time.
But it had a great spirit about it.

1917 was basically if you took soyboys from 2020 and dumped them into a video game version of WW1 except in movie form.
Worst war film I've watched in ages.
Dont waste your time.

Gettysburg is a place where you get this heavy, solemn feeling just being there.

Thin Red Line over Saving Private Ryan anyday for me.SPR just felt like yankee propaganda and since most of you guys are american i can see why you liked it so much. Its a good movie dont get me wrong but its definitely not the best war movie ever.
I enjoyed Tom Cruise's Valkyrie a lot too.Any recommendations on movies from the German perspective? I need to see Generation War and i loved Der Untergang.Ther German movie Stalingrad from 1993 starring Thomas Kretschmann was very well done.Going to watch Suite Francaise soon.I really want to see more from the German perspective though.
Also a number of good older movies like Guns Of Navarone,Force 10 from Navarone,Where Eagles Dare were really fun.Alistair Maclean was a fun writer to read as well.

Any that claim to be are 100% COPE, trying to make it out as if every German who served in the war was actually doing so against their will.
