I liked it at the time when it came out, mind you I was probably 12 or something.
In the grand scheme, I dont think it counts as one of the greats in the genre though.

If you watch a Russian movie set during that battle, the Soviets get incinerated in an explosion, but they dont fall down and die. They keep charging the enemy with flames covering 100% of their body....

Russian war movies make American war movies look like footage from the actual battles.

I remember seeing it as a kid and thinking it sucked, especially after watching saving private ryan. Then I watched it as an adult a couple times and realized how much more was there. Not sure how you can say it's objectively bad.

Why? Maybe it wasn't your cup of tea but I think it perfectly describes soldiers and how war affects them, and in that regard I liked it. Actors also gave pretty damn impressive performances...probably Christopher Walken's best ever.

For people who don't understand the praise for TRL, watch it again. It's not really a war movie. It's not really even a philosophical character study.

It's a movie about something deeper.

1917 was basically if you took soyboys from 2020 and dumped them into a video game version of WW1 except in movie form.
Worst war film I've watched in ages.

I've watched it probably a hundred times. Watched it on an Amazon fire stick a couple weeks ago and had never known there was a directors cut until then.

Gettysburg is a place where you get this heavy, solemn feeling just being there.

Thin Red Line over Saving Private Ryan anyday for me.SPR just felt like yankee propaganda and since most of you guys are american i can see why you liked it so much.Its a good movie dont get me wrong but its definitely not the best war movie ever.


I enjoyed Tom Cruise's Valkyrie a lot too.Any recommendations on movies from the German perspective? I need to see Generation War and i loved Der Untergang.Ther German movie Stalingrad from 1993 starring Thomas Kretschmann was very well done.Going to watch Suite Francaise soon.I really want to see more from the German perspective though.

Also a number of good older movies like Guns Of Navarone,Force 10 from Navarone,Where Eagles Dare were really fun.Alistair Maclean was a fun writer to read as well.

I dont believe there are any German war films from the German perspective.
Any that claim to be are 100% COPE, trying to make it out as if every German who served in the war was actually doing so against their will.
