but people who can afford the house should be allowed to live there imo...plus not all section 8 is bad. We have section 8 apartments a mile from here. There's basically zero crime in my zip code.

It's an entirely voluntary thing... you can chose to move somewhere there isn't a HOA. In Illinois I do not think they are not that bad... they will come and remove the snow from your driveway and sidewalks and cut your grass. Also they aren't that strict from my experience... nobody is going to measure your lawn every day. Just keep it a respectable length.

HOA’s don’t bother me for the most part. They’re nice to have to keep deadbeats out of the neighborhood by requiring they keep their property presentable.

Obviously the stories you see online about dictating whether you can fly an American flag or not is gay as fuk. But that’s not the norm

A city in the metro where I work actually outlawed renting to combat the spread of section 8. They saw it ruin the schools and subsequently the towns one exit closer to the major city and put an immediate stop to the spread. There was weeping and gnashing of teeth by all the usual suspects on that one but they couldn't do anything about it.

I live in Miami and most HOA’s range from 200-500 a month for single family home or townhome Might be even higher for some condos. Thank God I found a house With no HOA. HOAs are a robbery in plain site.

We rly don't. I won't post my zipcode, but we don't have much crime here. It depends on where u live, etc. North Portland is bad, but where I live, it is great.

My HOA is $103/quarter, dues are supposed to pay for facility maintenance. After six years, I am about ready to move because tons of people not taking care of their houses, they don't want to maintain the pool, and spending a ton of money to maintain an easement that the city is legally responsible for. **** HOAs.

Wasn't aware that they can prevent section 8 - that almost makes it worth it. Hate paying my $600 / year fees, but we do have a very nice neighborhood pool and private access to some nice parks and playgrounds so it's not too bad.

They definitely will be more important in the future with our current politics. Also, people who just pay dues and forget about the HOA, are only playing themselves. You should know the people involved.

Last time this came up, someone told a story of a grumpy old man on an HOA board who would ride his bike around the neighborhood with a camera and tape measure and hand out citations to every house he could over every minor thing. This HOA was like strict liability, too, so the homeowner would have to pay the ticket and fix the issue.

They talked about running him over over picking him off like a sniper. LOL

I'm moving into a new condo next week with an HOA and I'm already sick of the move-in rules. No weekend move in's, have to register with front desk 3 days in advance, etc. At least the building has a club house next door with gym, basketball court, theatre room, and a pool and jacuzzi right on the riverfront. Could be worse I guess.

I have no problem paying my $28/mo to my hoa. Neighborhood parks are well kept and clean. No busted up cars in my community. Exterior construction projects are all down well and match owners home.

Some of them can be a pain but most of them overwhelmingly work in the home-owners favor. Ideally I'd like to live in the country on at least 2 acres. But if I can't, I choose a neighborhood with a good HOA. The only way I'd buy a home in a neighborhood without an HOA is if every single homeowner there is a millionaire and hires professional lawn crews/landscapers.


Advantages of a HOA:

- Everyone has neatly manicured lawns/landscaping. Houses are kept up. You don't have to drive through your neighborhood looking at sloppy/run down homes/yards.
- Everyone in the neighborhood is either a neat/organized person that takes care of their property. Or they can afford to pay someone to take care of it.
- Keeps drug addicts, degenerates and in general really poor people out of the neighborhood.
- Everything is peaceful. No loud parties. No broken down cars in roadway/driveways. Etc.
- Keeps common grounds and neighborhood field/pond/park well maintained.
- Preserves your property value.
