........so you're telling me that a bunch of your neighbours can dictate how long you can grow your grass and whether or not you can have a new porch built?

I pay zero HOA and live in a great neighborhood...


Many include like landscaping which is cool otherwise u gotta do it urself/hire someone like i do of course. but ya when i was buying one of my requirements was no or little HOA. many/most places at least around where i live seem to have some sort of it, but plenty of places you can find without. like mine. i agree i thinks its ass of piss.

My neighborhood technically has an HOA, but the annual fee is less than $30 and pretty much solely goes to maintenance/upgrades for the neighborhood parks and fishing pier. I've lived in the same neighborhood for almost 20 years and never had an issue with them.

I have a relatively cheap HOA for my area (Palm Beach County, Florida). For the most part they don't really care much. I did get told to pressure wash my roof about a year ago which it needed. I don't really mind, for the most part they keep my neighborhood looking nice.

On average it looks like it's between $200-$300 a month for a HOA. For those who don't know, it's a Home Owners Association. They are typically found in gated communities, condos, planned neighborhoods, or places where they offer some sort of public amenity. You pretty much pay a little each month along with everyone else, and the funds go towards upkeep of the town. essentially it's an extra required tax and all of the funds go to your specific neighborhood instead of the entire country. If you don't pay the fees, the HOA can literally force you into foreclosure.

I've seen HOA fee's as low as $20 a month, and I've seen them personally at $1700 a month, and some even creep into the $4k-$6k which are the like multimillion gated communities. I looked at a house that was cheap at first, but then had the $1,500 a month HOA payment they tried to sneak in there. It was for like a bunch of chit like landscaping, pool, stores, resturants, security, utilities, and building upkeep. If you've ever seen those ski condos, those are usually HOA's with the money going towards the upkeep of the decks and patios, etc. It can be really nice to live in an HOA, but not for me. Some of them can dictate that your grass can't be dead, your house has to be a certain color, you can't do this to your house, etc. If I wake up one day and want to build a massive deck outside my house, fuk an HOA, I'll go to Home Depot and build it that day.

Sounds like condo fees, which are just as much of a ripoff. And the scary thing is, they can do an assessment or hike them anytime they like and screw you. One of my friends bought a condo with reasonable fees, then the building replaced the air conditioning and got into a lawsuit and the fees spiked. She couldn't sell her unit after that because the fees were so high.

One reason I would never buy a condo.

I would never live in a neighborhood with an HOA. When we were looking at houses we actually had to nix several we liked from the list because we found out the neighborhood had an HOA.

Yeah, I mean if I every buy something (I'm still a rentcel) - I kind of like the idea of getting condo, but...I don't like that they have HOA fees, and that is probably a dealbreaker for me. Pay the place off, but still have to keep paying HOA fees (on top of property tax of course). I'm not too keen on that.

CA HOAs are fuking tyrannical, talk about eye opening. I will never ever ever ever buy a house with an HOA, dgaf how low the fees are srs.

Many of them out here they tell you how maintain your grass, cant park anything in garages but cars (gym equipment/storage etc), request permission to change your door color (!!), and a gang of other chit. The cost for this privilege? $150-$700/month, its fuking insane.

A friend recently bought a brand new $770,000 house, built a gym in part of his huge garage, and got a letter days later saying he wasn't allowed to lmaooooo. Now he works out with the door closed on 90 degree days wtf haha

"But it keep muh neighborhood clean" Bruh...if I spend $600-700k for a normal ass 3/2 house Ill be damned if I pay hundreds more a month to be told what Im allowed to do.
