My own grandfather. Was born and Okie during the Great Depression to a drunken absent dad. Had to sleep under bridges and eat frogs they caught and potatoes almost every night. Eventually became an Okie migrant worker picking figs, cotton, pecans, citrus, and potatoes. He credits a black guy he picked with for showing him how to stack the cotton on his forearm to increase the amount he could carry. During the depression Californians hated okies, and even made him and his Okie friends sit with the segregated blacks in movie theaters. Eventually he took up welding during the Korean war in an airplane factory working seven days a week and eventually getting to manager. He kept that same work ethic throughout a couple other jobs and eventually managed to save enough to buy a gas station and from there he turned it into a successful repair shop and after decades became VERY comfortable. The guy is unreal.
