How big is the class? Maybe the TA’s are doing the grading?

Also, be ready to explain everything and, very seriously, it is time to go NC on him. What he did could have very serious consequences. Even if turns out ok, he really did something inexcusable.

Seriously.

How hard is it to take a paragraph and sub out a few words for some of their synonyms?

Accounting, yeah? What kind of question were you asked that required an essay? Anyway, let's hope it doesn't lead to academic probation or a hearing. Go back to Econ 101 and study the prisoner's dilemma too

damn, you didn't even have time to change the answers.

i'm agnostic, but I think the only thing you can do is pray and hope for the best...

you could also admit to it ahead of time and beg for an F

OP, you're an idiot for putting so much trust in your "friend". But seriously, that's not your friend in a true sense of the word. A real friend wouldn't jeopardize your future like that and would have just taken the hit. Cut him loose, dead serious..

Damn OP fingers crossed this slips through the cracks.

How much time would've he had to paraphrase?

Ntn you can do but wait and see for now. Coming clean seems like the only way to go should you guys get caught. Hopefully he's on board with that or it would make things even more difficult.

I would force your 'friend' to fall on the sword and admit to cheating and that you had nothing to do with it. Perhaps he could admit to copying, but it was a mistake on his part - you sent him the word document as a guiding post and he accidentally copy / pasted the wrong paragraph (your's, not his).

Unsure what you could potentially use as leverage - perhaps going to the university first and not giving him an opportunity to defend himself.

Any updates on this one OP? GL

EDIT:

Wanted to give my own opinion on this, being a college grad and all.

1) Never transmit answers / info to anyone ever, and if you do somehow, make it solely verbal (non-text / non-writing).

2) Once someone makes it clear they're trying to use you for answers. Distance yourself. Be friendly, but don't do what they say (ie sit next to them in exams or send them homework), just literally ignore or even lie, say you haven't done the homework or haven't studied or some chit. Kinda BS to be honest, better off just saying "leave me alone I'm not helping you, do your own work" at that point.

3) If there's an online system used during upload, or pre-grading phases for anti-cheat, if the answers are close to verbatim then you're gonna get flagged.

4) If #3 doesn't occur, then it's possible that there's multiple graders (TA's), depending on the teacher and class of course, which could improve your odds of going undiscovered.

5) If it's "caught", then it falls to the decisions of the teacher. Are you or the other student cool with the teacher? Is the teacher a bit of a stickler, or have they routinely preached code of conduct and how important integrity is?

I don't think I'd go as far as to contact the professor about this myself, as the "best" outcome is that it goes unnoticed, so why ruin whatever chances you have of that?

That said if it is discovered, depending on the teacher and your relationship with the teacher, I could see any of the following occur:

- Lower grades for both of you, anywhere from a "you both get 0's for the question" to a F / 0 on the exam.

- You both will have to take different versions of the exam to get your grade. And the maximum grade you can get may be reduced.

- You could completely fail the course and have to retake it.

- You could face Code of Conduct issues with the college / department. Resulting in things such as volunteering/community-service requirements, course retakes, removal from the college (so may have to switch majors), suspension, expulsion, etc.

In college I never helped anyone that didn't help me first pertaining to a class. I didn't give af if they were my friend or not. I had assignments though where we'd help eachother and stuff but if someone asked me for help i'd paraphrase my own answer before sending it to them just in case they decided to copy and paste it like your dumbass friend OP.

By my estimates, about 80 percent of people cheat at school. Googling how to do your hw is cheating.

The biggest cheating I was inadvertently apart of was in college. We had to do an engineering simulator, and it spits out every action (opening, closing, adjusting, alarm, failures, etc.) onto a word file. This word file would be like almost 10 pages with 350 individual text lines. For the final, we had to do this one last simulation which was really hard. Essentially a nuclear power plant was in critical failure mode and you had to get it back up online. However, I thought it was pretty easy and I went to the lab, did it in one shot. The program spit out the word file and I was good to go. The computers are ass old so I went to delete the word file and it froze and wouldn't close out. I decided to type the word "Penis" in a random line on the report and then shut down the computer. A week later 90% of the kids taking the class are called in, me being one of them. Apparently, we all had the exact same print-out for the lab and we would all fail the class. Turns out, the computer ended up not shutting down, and the printout was still there. They should all relatively be the same, but not exact. I think 10 kids found it and shared it with their friends, who then shared that and so on. So now 60 kids have the same lab and I'm like what the fuk. I'm sitting next to some kid and I look at his report and I start to laugh. I raise my hand and tell the professor that I did the work, but I did not share it. That my computer froze and I thought I turned it off. He asks me how can I prove it, and I chit you not, I told him to check someones paper, page 7, line 23, middle of the sentence. He goes.... Penis??? Then he checks the next one, and the next one, and then he checks mine, which does not have the penis in it, thus proving my innocence. srs.
that feel when your penis gets you out off trouble instead of in..

This happened to me; I let a friend copy off my final exam and they were supposed to change it up a bit, but didn't. It was a huge class with multiple TA's grading, but they still found out. We both got 0's on the exam and failed the class since the final was weighed so heavily. Had to retake it over the summer. I was such an idiot. Looking back, that was the best scenario. If they hated you they could probably try and get you expelled over it.
