We already have basic income, unemployment insurance, welfare etc...

I think a UBI could be constructed to where it doesn't discourage work, it'd be great. All for it. I don't understand why big corps, get bailouts, but the working man and women have to eat chit. Society is built from the bottom up, not the top down. Success has never trickled down. Strengthen the foundation (the middle class and the lower class), and the rising tide will lift all boats. It's inherently capitalistic. People who fearmonger and scream "muhhh communism/socialism" don't actually know what they're talking about.

I can. It is the nature of technology that the number of jobs required to maintain or advance the tech is lower than the number of jobs required to do the work without the tech. That is a simple fact. You can't get around that. Another simple fact is that human intelligence has an average value. The average human is not capable of understanding the science and engineering necessary to do the specialized work involved to advance or maintain future technology. Thus, the effective available jobs for people will dwindle.

Yes, but wouldn't it be easier if they just died?

We used to have huge families because it was necessary to have the labor for farming, now if you have more than 4 kids you're some kind of wacko.

Society moved on and the family unit shrunk, we should do the same with the population as a whole.

That's a better argument for deporting illegals and strictly limiting immigration than it is for UBI.

The population growth is less than replacement rate.

I'll put it really simply for you idiots. If a robot can be made to do anything you can do, but better, then what purpose would there be for you? We are slowly moving toward this question as we race to make better AI. The only saving grace is that humans may end up cheaper. But then you have to look at what can be sustained with wages for menial work. There is no benefit to having a society where a handful of dudes who control the robots are powerful and wealthy and everyone else is a menial wageslave.

Yes, but I think offering a paid stipend for individuals who agree to be sterilized would be more accepted than limiting offspring like China did

Wouldn't this hypothetical create more jobs for repairing/cleaning/building said robots? For people to make small business' to make robot clothes and hats much the same as everyone and their mother selling face masks right now?

No UBI. That being said, corporations shouldn't get bailed out either. Yes, there will be pain and lots of it, but we will be a better society because of it.

That's why the amount of money in circulation would be regulated. Whether we like it or not, a more technologically advanced society equates to an authoritarian socialist dystopia where most of the population is economically useless and lives off welfare and a few smart people maintain and advance the tech. Every country will look a lot like China or worse in 200 years if we even have a species and instead of people mostly working, people will just be on welfare. Matters of entertainment and politics will dominate life. I think war and extinction is inevitable long before that though.

It'll never work.

All it does is create a price floor for living.

Also, prepare for the sob stories of, "I spent all my UBI on scratch offs and booze, now I am getting evicted"

Because it'll be such a pitiful amount that anyone with a bean of motivation will still want to work to live a decent life.

OP, you're asking on a far right wing forum so the general consensus will obviously be no.

Seems like you've got a lot of "what if's" going on there. I'm obviously no expert but this seems like a conversation to be having maybe a bit further down the road when we're starting to get a clearer picture of what things might be like.

It most definitely is commie bs.

If the unemployment rate were to get to 20% chronically, people would look for jobs elsewhere. That's what they do in other countries now.

The government doesn't generate revenue, the people are forced to pay it. UBI is a tax on the working class to support people who can't or choose not to work. Currently we pay taxes to help support people who can not work. Why should we include those who choose not to work? F them.

We already have an example of what happens when families income drastically increases ...The price of everything (cost of living/inflation) goes up drastically.

Women enter the work place - Cost of living, goods and inflation shot up to accommodate
Universal income enters the home - Cost of living, goods and inflation will shoot up to accommodate

Do a google image search for cost of living and inflation over the last 50 years and see when the straight up cliff of inflation/cost of living occurred in the US economy...Ironic that it skyrockets between the 1960s -70s when women entered the workplace en masse.

There is little to no financial benefit for the family today for the women to be in the workplace. The net income increase to the family has been offset and eaten up by cost increases and inflation. The bankers and the wealthy sucked up all of the benefits and what did we get in return - The destruction of the family nucleus with zero internal financial benefit to the family. They raised the bar so the rats could keep working harder while they benefited. Now the common family is underwater if the women/man wants to stay home as a single family income and take care of the family.

The exact same thing will happen with universal income. The rich will soak up all of the benefits after a few years and you will be left with nothing. Its nothing more than a wealth redistribution scheme..just like the promise of women in the workplace.

...but herp derp -universal income, dont have to do nothing but watch TV and create arts and crafts and blow bubbles.

If you don't, those people won't quietly starve to death like you are hoping. They will burn every major city to the ground and destroy the country.
