Well known throughout history that homeless people are very often mentally ill. Substance abuse and mental illness go hand in hand.

Ask Japan.
You cannot "solve" homelessness or any social problem really, only mitigate it. People are homeless for a few reasons all of which point towards a lack of social support (family).
America is all about the individual now, black sheep get cast out and it is "okay" to be a soft snowflake. People don't get shamed like they used to for being turds or slackers, because feelings.
Families don't take care of their black sheep. Mentally ill people and substance abusers get cast aside by their family and tossed onto the streets. Rehabilitation programs...jails...prisons...are totally useless in this snowflake society.
Instill extremely harsh penalties for drug transporters/dealers the poison our society and make us weak. Bring back the glorification of the nuclear moral family. Bring back reasonable loser shaming. Make jails uncomfortable again and FORCE people to be rehabilitated and gain skills to EARN release. Those are the only realistic solutions IMHO.

The problem shouldn't be how we eliminate homeless people (not all are bad) it should be how do we eliminate problem homeless people? The homeless people who are addicted to drugs, mentally ill (potentially violent) and out there committing crimes.
For drug addicts, we need to have harsher punishments for repeat convictions of drug use. I know this isn't popular because it goes against the whole "my body" thing, but for people running around naked in the streets high AF, they need more than one night in jail they won't remember and time served. Lets get them off the street for 6 months + at a time, increasing to years. Just like DUI, there should be the separate crime of being under the influence of drugs in public where you are causing a nuisance or endangering others.
For the mentally ill people, we need to bring back mental institutions. Simple. Especially people who have been placed on multiple WIC 5150 holds (mental evaluation holds), after say, 5, you should spend mandatory X amount of time in a mental institution.
For the criminals, we just need harsher punishments and longer jail/prison sentences. It shouldn't be about punishment per say, it should be about getting these people off of the street. My PD has arrested the same guy before twice in a day for the same crimes. They get out, and just do the same chit again that night, and then the next morning, because there's no punishments. Build more prisons. Let's fill those up.
Fixing these 3 groups will get rid of 90% ish of the problem homeless population people bitch about, leaving the "normal" functioning homeless people that don't really bother people left. The ones that are sleeping in their cars when they're not working to get back on their feet or the ones that just like the homeless lifestyle but aren't into crazy drug addictions, mentally unstable, or criminal activity.

Homeless people have issues and typically can't function in society. Opening up asylums would be a start. Other than that, not much you can do

Homelessness a big issue. You see the ones on the street, those the ones that aren't going to accept help, they're beyond help. Families drifting from motel to motel, people sleeping in their car/van, people rooming because theirs no other way-thats the real problem. Ain't gonna be solved by any liberal policy. Stuffing them into hotels and building campsites or whatever doesn't do jack chit for the real problem, which is that's damn hard to get by if something happens and you have to start over. "Get an education" is fukking retarded as well. Takes too long and doesn't help the laid off factory worker that has kids, a house, and a car to pay off. Jobs. That's it, jobs that pay. Manufacturing, tech, trades.

Stop the drugs coming from China through the mail, ports, and Mexico? They are making ******** legally in China and selling it here with no criminal risk.

Lot of it you cannot control unless you have a large police presence. As an example, people aren't going to load up a van and drive to Northern Maine, but they will drive to california because it's warm. And because the cops will not hassle them. I live by a park and these zips just show up in vans with out of state plates. there have to be websites telling these zips where to go with ratings, no different than yelp or airbnb. Will never understand how someone with a Wisconsin plate ends up in my neighborhood

Let's be honest here.
There's two kinds of homeless people: Those who are legit down on their luck due to various mitigating circumstances but can and will eventually be back on their feet. They might need to stay in a shelter for a short while but generally these dudes have pride and want to be self reliant.
The ones that piss everyone off are the addicts & mentally ill ones who absolutely REFUSE to even make an effort to turn their lives around. These people are honestly hopeless, you can't help someone who doesn't want to help themselves.

$31,000or more - costper year to imprison an inmate; $31K is an all prisons figure, Federal for 2019 is over $36,000
$12,000 to $16,000- medianrent per year for aone or two bedroomapartment
It is less expensive to give the homeless housing than it is to put them into prisons or mental hospitals. You can kick in another $3600 for paid utilities and still spend less than what an institution costs.

Housing alone doesn't solve the problem in a lot of cases. Plenty of them don't WANT to be in a home. All the same problems still exist. Crime, drugs, lower property value, etc.

People "choose" to live in a van when their luck runs out and they don't have money. Medical issue wipes out your savings and job, and you end up on the street-how fukking easy is it to pull $5k together for first month+last month+deposit with chit credit? It's not.
The struggle with homelessness is the fact that it's extraordinarily difficult to get back on your feet when you land on your ass. The chain of events that lands a person on the street doesn't magically fix itself, it takes time and a lot of help.
A poster said earlier that more effort should be focused on *preventing* people from falling into homelessness. 100% correct.

Nobody wants them in their backyard, or as neighbors since they won't take care of their property or support themselves, you'll need to give them housing AND still treat the mental illnesses/drug abuse and that's IF they can be saved and haven't rotted their brains yet - and then give them a way to sustain themselves (welfare most likely since they probably cant get hired anywhere)
It might be easier and less costly in the long run to put them in an institution where all their needs are met and they can't bother anyone.

Having personally fallen into arrears on a mortgage (first husband took off) once you are down it seems like "they" want to keep you down. I could pay one month of my mortgage, but was told that they would not accept a one month payment and that I had to pay the full balance owed. If I sent them a one month payment they would just hold it in escrow and continue to consider my mortgage unpaid and to threaten me with foreclosure.

You're conflating 2 types, the lost cases that are druggies and don't want/need help and the regular people that end up on the streets due to a financial hard times. John Doe with 2 kids and a wife that just lost his job would def be helped by this. It's cheaper and better in the long run to keep em on their feet till things improve. This doesn't mean endless handouts, but if he can find a new job and work his way back, that is preferable than having his family park the van at a park every night.Housing comes with more issues like where would you put them and how will they maintain a home and make a living?
Nobody wants them in their backyard, or as neighbors since they won't take care of themselves or their property, you'll need to give them housing AND still treat the mental illnesses/drug abuse and that's if they can be saved - and then give them a way to sustain themselves (welfare most likely since they probably cant get hired anywhere)
It might be easier and less costly in the long run to put them in an institution where all their needs are met and they can't bother anyone.

Mandatory jail/detox for drug offenders. Don't call it jail. Also what happened to loony bins? Mental hospitals run by state.

And, as I just replied, some will straight not want to be housed.

I don't really have a problem with "homeless" so to speak. If you want to live in nature that's your business. It's the bums that lay around panhandling and committing crime, hustling people that I can't stand.
Make stolen valor punishable by death. You could eliminate about 90% of the homeless because they all claim to be veterans but only a small fraction actually are homeless.
