Already mentioned, but if you only state your net income, then you are forgetting about all the money going into your retirement accounts (401K, 403b, 457b, HSA, FSA, DCP, etc..). And who brags anyway?

Your NET INCOME, aka take home, is all that counts.

Deal with it. Period.
Tax is taxed via progressive brackets. Higher gross inhereny means higher net.
