It's easily done when you've spent your life driving on the opposite side (i wouldn't expect American brahs to understand), i've driven on the wrong side of the road for very short periods while driving in Europe before, but it was late at night and didn't result in an accident before correcting myself, but i haven't done it since. Taking responsibility, and learning a lesson from this mistake is the most important thing to allow you to properly move forward

As harsh as it sounds, i'd urge you strongly avoid contacting him directly in ANY capacity. If he does decide to take things to court, trying to pay him in private will just look worse for you. Just let the insurance companies handle the legal side of things - that's their job, if he believes he's entitled to compensation then he can take the proper route. You don't know what kind of person he is, and he could very well be looking to capitalize on this to the maximum extent possible even at your expense, no matter how 'nice' you are.This is how you end up with people walking all over you in life.

I had a moment last week driving where I was overconfident and not focused, thank God nothing happened but it's a wake-up call. We take driving for granted, especially when you've been driving so long.

You sound like you have a good heart to be so worried about the other driver. Having said that, under no circumstances should you contact him privately about the matter, let alone giving him extra money from yourself personally. Those are issues for insurance/the courts to handle. Also, seek legal advice for yourself. Mistakes happen, and it sucks that the guy in your case got hurt. Hopefully his recovery goes well. Having said all that, never underestimate peoples' potential ability to take advantage of you in these types of situations.

When I was a dum teenager, I once backed into a guy in a parking lot. It was low speed, no one got hurt, and minimal damage done in a private parking lot so cops weren't called over it. The guy offered to keep insurance out of it, which I thought was a kind gesture to avoid racking up an accident on my record. Next thing I know, the guy starts calling me up saying he thinks his neck hurts suddenly and he wants me to pay off a bunch of medical bills as well as the paint touch up on his car. I told him then and there I was done trying to handle it without insurance and that we'd just let insurance handle it, and that I'd just take the hit on my insurance. My insurance indeed paid for his car repair, but they laughed their anguses off at his bs medical claims that had nothing to do with anything.

My point is, people can and often will F with you when they have the opportunity. You contacting/paying this guy in private will look terrible for you if he decides to take you to court for an additional pay day besides what the insurance companies work out.
