I'm kind of pissed that I went to grad schools for no reason and took on that debt

Debt is paid off but it was still six figure debt that I could've used elsewhere

On the plus side, I like the industry that I work in and will never be kept out of a potential job due to educational credentials

Finance bro who switched to medicine around 2008 when last recession hit. I was nothing but an excel jockey. I thank the good lord for thst recession, because of not for that recession, I’d still be doing thst mind numbing ****. My job now is more like a hobby, I look forward to going to work everyday. I’m extremely fortunate to be in the position I’m in.

OP, you got to find a way to make it work somehow. If you have family, they take precedence unless you’re on the verge of offing yourself, in which case, you need a new job.

What about your weekends? Don't you make enough to truly enjoy them doing fulfilling activities with your family? Doesn't leading a family take away from the suck of the job?

Either way I hate seeing threads like this cause I'm deadset on a wife and kids but if that's not fulfilling might as well rot (notsrs)
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

To each their own, Most physicians feel immense satisfaction in their work. They actually make a difference in people’s lives instead of enriching their bosses or investors. Not saying being an excel jockey is not an important job, but you can’t compare it to being a physician. Stress is real, that’s why it’s not for the weak. Especially if you’re a surgeon. You’re literally the man (or woman).

Maybe you can’t exit right this minute but for the love of god start working towards something else.
This.

Make some kind of plan. Maybe you have to cut back on the lifestyle some. Could be at some point you need to relocate.

But just knowing that you are grinding toward something that you want instead of grinding with no end in sight should make life better.

My job is basically something I do while living my life, which is fuking awesome. I wake up at 9, check the markets, check my email, and then work on any deals I have in progress. Always a steady stream of incoming business, and it's very predictable. Yes, I am often still doing work at 9PM and on weekends, but it's usually low impact stuff and often presents unique challenges that I like to figure out how to solve. Some of the complex stuff is so routine to me now that it's downright easy.

Not sure how much longer the gravy train is going to keep going for, but if I remain at my current income for another couple years I should have enough to semi-retire and live off of passive income.

I don’t know man, you can try all the voodoo. But when **** hits the fan, you’ll end up at a medical doctors office/hospital, not a chiropractor or some other alternative healer.

Anyway, I’m a surgeon working in acute care setting with trauma patients. I am sure you’ll need me if you wrecked your car or fell from a ladder, whether you like it or not.

Idk if giving up your financial security at that point would be wise, thinking about your family and yourself.

Maybe try doing tradie stuff as a hobby? Build something in your backyard, remodel a room in your home, do some landscaping..

STEM here and I tend to get similar feels as you do, BRB just sit in your ass and do some trivial stuff stuff on Microsoft Excel while the boys are out there sweating it, being buddies and building something with their hands.

We can't have it all brah, we gotta play with the cards we're dealt..

The corporate world takes a toll on you. The more chit you’re in charge of, you more blame you have to take for other peoples fuk ups. It’s not an easy atmosphere for a lot of people to thrive/be happy in. If your situation is especially bad, I would consider applying to other companies. I know people who intentionally refuse offers that give them more pay + responsibility, just because they want a better balance of work/life.

this is why we all need to go back to warring and conquering, men aren't suppose to live long sedentry meaningless lives, we thrive in chaos, under stress, we need to be out there forming tribes and getting into wars with each other, the modern existence is too beta for our needs

I thought that is why we had sports.

Maybe you should start small- like co-ed softball.

Average-looking wageslaves should think 10x before they buy a nice house or wife up a sloot out of their league. And 100x before they have kids. Because that's it. There's no coming back from that. Your life is legit over. At that point you can look 20 years into the future and everything will be predictable and crystal clear boring af chit. The only exciting things that can happen are all negative: wife leaves you and takes all your money and the kids, your daughters turn out to be super whores, your son turns out to be a *******, sickness, death, etc.

But brahs only think with their cocks sadly. All the bad decisions, all the enslaving decisions, are directly connected with pussy. And there's no one more susceptible to the spells of pussy than a wageslaving sub-Chad.
So it this bitter negative attitude making your life better? Or is it some deadweight you are dragging through your days because it is easier to believe that everyone loses than it is to try you best and see how you measure up?

This, I've done tradie jobs (and worse) and fuk doing that at my age, especially in the Texas summer.

Everything loses its shine eventually OP, I just got a dream job and doubled my salary but feel strangely flat and unexcited about it. I have a pretty 100lb wife, paid off my mortgage, get to wfh and have what's on paper an awesome job but the mid life joy reaper gets us all in the end.

Just start a business bro.

I once had a midlife crisis and thought fuk it why I don't just start a business

Then I decided that my business should be earning mid 7s per year with a 60% profit margin and just did it. As easy as starting a business.

NOT FOOKEN SRS, anyone who recommends starting a business has never started a business in their life. It's not as easy as "just start a business bro". It's 6 months of massive debt, staying up day and night thinking whether you're gonna make it. Newsflash, 99% of the time you won't make it.

Can't start a biz together, couples don't do well starting a biz as equal partners, too much ego and feelings and baggage at stake. As a business person, you need to be able to be blunt to your business partner. Money will turn into the #1 thing. Seen too many couples try and fail.
The blackest pill of all is that your title is accurate and not hyperbolic in any sense

As salaried earners it’s just another cog in the machine expendable to upper management. No real meaning unless you love your job (which is rare due to the lack of autonomy in 9-5s)

Dem feels.

Similar story.

Wanted to be in banking and work in M&A and strategy. Got my BS and Masters and took the safe approach of accounting and finance/econ background. Graduated in 2009 at peak recession when Harvard MBA's were being laid off and there was zero hope for a low experience new grad. With crushing student loan debt to boot.

So I fell back on my accounting degree. Did that crap for 5 years and made it to manager level running a team and was miserable. Then transitioned to FP&A at a couple "trendy" industry companies over the last 5 years in senior management roles. By all standards I have "made it" but I definitely want more for myself.

It's always interesting at a new company the first 6-12 months because you learn the business and get new exposure but then it's just the same old same old. Modeling, putting out fires, babysitting and fixing other people's stupid decisions, etc... but worst of all, the fcking politics.

The politics is MF'ing soul-draining and it's at every damn company there is and it gets worse as you move up the ladder. It really sucks when you work with a bunch superiors that are making bank (legit millionaires) that dedicate their life to their job and you realize they're all scum sucking dbags that only care about the politics and you'd rather lose everything than be like them.

Feels bad complaining because hours are good and pay is very solid, but I busted my ass for it and it's just not fulfilling.

Spend a lot of time wishing I had followed something more fulfilling like lawyer, FBI, or medicine.

Anyway,

Maybe look into transitioning in other facets of finance/accounting.
Get your CFE (I assume you're already a CPA) and consider trying to get into financial fraud work with the big 4 or a major insurance company.

Also, although I'm now bored there, FP&A is a good natural transition for accounting folks with critical thinking and analytic skills. It's definitely more interesting than accounting and can be a good change of pace.

Bro take out a decent size life insurance policy for your family’s sake. I’d done that a few years ago just for the piece of mind that I know they will be taken care of if something happens to me. It has relieved a burden off of my shoulders and it’s relatively cheap. You may even have this option through your work HR plan.

I took out around 1 million. It cost me about 40 bucks per paycheck.
