Hitting dat dere mid-life crisis. I got a nice house, married with a nice LTC wife that is down for it whenever, but my job (manager in public accounting) is absolute chit. I hate it with every single fibre of my being. They pay is good, the hours are not long (40-45), but the stuff I do is chit and mind numbing. I can't imagine doing this sort of thing for the rest of my life. Just thinking about the next 20 years fills me with absolute depression. Am I being a bitch, or is it something legit?

I know a lot of people are worse off than me, and I know that I should be thankful, but I don't want to be 60, look back on my life, and feel pride in doing accounting for the fukking chit businesses I deal with, and earning the greedy kunt partner a lot of money.

I want to be a tradie (legit serious), electrician or carpenter, but the tradie bosses I know in business point blank tell me I'm too old, I'll get into get for 3 years, then my back will give out, and I'll be fukked. Its meaningful work though, I can point at a house and say I helped build that.

Its hard for me to change jobs either, because my mortgage is too high for me to quit outright either. Even changing jobs and starting at grad/intermediate pay will mean a 50-70% paycut, which I cannot live with.

Just a wasted life. I studied accounting/finance wanted to be some big swinging dik IB, then graduated into the GFC, and the finance industry is still dead as a doorknob ever since then.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Pick up a tradie job on the weekend and you'll be thankful you get to make your money sitting down.

cant you like to be a CFO at a small time construction/remodeling company and then maybe you can go visit job sites as an excuse to get out of the office, maybe it would be less boring.

idk if you want to make the same pay you have to find something close enough to what you do that gets credit for your experience.

Typically you're supposed to be a tradie in your 20's and then move up to office roles. Being a tradie in your 30's is rough.

My job is kind of similar, in a lot of regards, though I'm sure you make quite a bit more. It get tedious, but its also chill (most of the time) and I have great work life balance. I have some real shyt jobs, so that gives a lot of perspective. I'm assuming if you're in Public Accounting you were at one time doing 60-70 hour weeks?

If I die, my family is fukked. I had a cancer scare recently, and was about to pull the trigger on a second job so that I can clear my mortgage before I die. Ironically, that would have been heroic, doing something I hate just to save my family.

Motorcycles and corvettes is a temporary fix either way, its not meaningful, and I'll just be a lame chit accountant trying to reclaim his youth, which is beyond pathetic.

I used to look up to IB and day traders myself OP. Hanging out on wallstreetoasis and Investors hub, yahoo finance, marketwatch etc. Studied accounting, but didn't finish. Other kids looked up to Lebron, I literally looked up to Lloyd Blankfein dedsrs. The only problem was that I was an awful student. Eventually got into ecommerce and sales. Use some of my accounting knowledge to manage our books, but that's just about the extent of it.

I say all that to say...I feel you bro, I go through the same thing occasionally. Swear I've had 3-4 quarter life and mid-life crisis

OP you lifestylemaxxed instead of investmaxxing that was your mistake. you should be able to live frugally and invest until your 40 and then retire off passive income off of a corporate accounting salary. but if you have a wife and kids that may not be possible.

You wouldn't make it as a trader, (almost 100%). IB is an easy field, its all plug and chug and knowing the nuances of your sector, but its still an awful grind at like 80 hour weeks early in your career.

Best advice I can give is to start a business with your wife in a completely unrelated field to learn the ins and outs of owning a business then transition to one more tailored to your personal expertise after 10 or so years of making the other one work

Pick up a lucrative hobby:

Screenwriting: practice writing stories and read books on screenwriting. Subscribe to Celtx and you can type a screenplay from any computer that has Internet access, for around $15/month.

Write songs for tv shows or commercials: if you’re musically inclined, you can make a lot of money writing new songs for tv and commercials, you don’t even need to read music, just record the beat and melody.

Comic books: this takes quite an investment, but if you learn it and love art, you can make cash doing commissions for people at deviantart. Art supplies can be expensive initially, but with an Apple iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, you won’t need paper or ink.

I actually stopped my wife from looking for another job, after she was retrenched from her previous one (she was in an extremely exploitative industry) to start her own business in something she loves (not fashion, or baking cupcakes or some retarded girl chit, but like an actual legit skill) Earnings are still low 2 years in, she feels bad not contributing, but I can honest hand to heart say it was one of the things I'm proudest about.

Can't start a biz together, couples don't do well starting a biz as equal partners, too much ego and feelings and baggage at stake. As a business person, you need to be able to be blunt to your business partner. Money will turn into the #1 thing. Seen too many couples try and fail.

I'm not unhappy per se, but it's so hard to not feel unaccomplished or unfulfilled with my career and daily activities, but there is no way out. I have a baby on the way too now, and I need to support the family big time. It might be time to LDAR for us op
