I think whether it is unique or not, if there were perfect reporting and only heterosexuality, the averages would be identical mathematically if there were the same number of men and women total. Each sex case would add 1 count to each gender. The average sex partners would be the total sex cases divided by the number of each gender. These two would be the same for each group even if it were 1 chad and a bunch of incels.

In practice, the distribution in the population isn't 50:50 and men tend to overestimate and women tend to "forget". There are also homosexuals. And the homosexuality rate varies between the two genders as well.

If you sample a virgin and someone that has been with a hundred the mean is a meaningless 50.
This happens all the time with a bimodal distribution because people are terrible with stats.

As always, the answer is probably in the middle. The study definitely seems a little low, but the misc is also extremely out of touch with reality. There's definitely a group of dudes and sl00ts looking to maximize their notches, but it's the minority of people I know. Most dudes, including myself btw so no hate, aren't good-looking enough to routinely pull outside of a few times a year and/or are in semi-serious relationships. Plus, it's a lot harder than the misc makes it out to be. A guy I know who was good-looking, outgoing/flirty, looking to hookup whenever he could, and is a doctor didn't even pull that much in college. Maybe only like 7-8 because he was in a relationship.

For the rest of the dudes, they don't really stand a chance and/or aren't even interested. 4 doesn't seem that unreasonable. A lot of guys also straight up lie about how much ass they're pulling - I've seen it many, many times.

The study reported the median, not the average, and so that's not even relevant. But if he was thinking of the average, I guess it makes more sense as to why he would say that. But for what it's worth, you could have perfect reporting and the average would not be the same. That would not suggest anything is wrong with the study. There is no sexual correspondence between sampled men and women and so you wouldn't simultaneously add counts to both. That would only make sense if you sampled the entire population.
