I haven't been to the doctor in 18 years. Last time I was a teenager and crushed my leg on a 4 wheeler. Imagine paying fat people to get blood pressure medicine and insulin for 18 years and getting no personal benefit from your tax money.

Especially as poorcels are often also fatcels and chainsmokercels. Rich people here often pay for private healthcare because it's much better, but still are forced to pay for public healthcare they don't even use.

Our system isn’t amazing, but I rage inside thinking about having to pay more to take care of druggies and obese fuks who can’t take care of themselves. I’d rather them die srs

I also haven’t been to the doctor in like a decade, I paid a couple thousand for my child to be born but I can easily afford it with my high salary and low tax rate.

I legit just started paying for health insurance and I was kinda blown away at the cost of a decent plan through my benefits. I'm now paying Health, Vision, Dental, Life, and Car Insurance, soon to add Home insurance to that list. Why the fuk do we not have an insurance that covers all insurances?

Like pretty much everything they touched, US healthcare was ruined by labor unions becoming too powerful back in the 1960s and 1970s(as well as Health Insurance being attached to everyone's employment instead of everyone receiving additional pay and buying it on their own).

It's the best healthcare system in the world, but goddamn it needs decent reform. Obamacare was nothing more than attempting to nationalize a portion of the system, when in reality it needs to become something where everyone has Insurance for massive costly items that could arise, and then they pay out of pocket for basic routine items. There would be a bit of pain while prices fix themselves for the routine items.

Meh I have private health cover in the UK, it costs more than the equivalent cover in the US, especially considering NHS being paid for through tax... Private is great tho, feel when same week appointment with the countries best specialists

Those stories of the people getting bills for $2,000 ambulance rides? So those are people that didn't have insurance, and the hospital is "attempting" to get money from them. Meaning the bill isn't really the bill - it's the first step in a negotiation to get some cost recuperation from the patient. If a person got a $2k bill and they were dirt poor, the next step is they'd call the hospital and say they can't pay this, they don't even have money for insurance. The hospital would then ask "Ok how much can you pay?" So these stories of USA people facing crazy medical costs aren't real.

And FYI - no politician has been able to put forward a proposal for universal healthcare in the USA that was practical. In a country of 330 million, with huge subsets of the population that not only don't contribute but are massive drains on the system, the last policy proposal put forward was by Elizabeth Warren, a former presidential candidate. Her plan acknowledged that it would cost $53 trillion to achieve universal healthcare, and that the money to pay for it coming from "wishful thinking" (ie taxing stock trades). She was laughed right out of the building and had to quit her presidential campaign shortly after releasing her impossible plan.
Im gonna disagree with the ambulance ride on some plans.

I had a $500 deductible and then full coverage.

Last year i had a ambulance ride due to symptoms of a stroke from an urgent care visit.

Guess what? Insurance wouldn't cover it and told me a ride is out of network and that means my deductible go to a lower tier which is 2k!

Ambulance services are separate from any hospital, they are private.

health insurance is annoying. i had active insurance for a big crash, ended up having 2 different insurance plans for outpatient therapy and stuff because i was told itd help, still ended up paying thousands out of pocket. despite a legit emergency/traumatic crash, there were still things they didn't want to cover. then when i had two plans the companies liked to fight over which one should pay it so that was apparently a pain in the ass. thankfully my Mom helped with most that stuff.

I have to think the majority of people that come out in support of the US system don't really get it.

US pays more per capita for government funded healthcare than many other countries spend to provide healthcare for their entire population.

Then we pay the cost of private insurance/private pay ON TOP OF THAT.

You are paying more in taxes for healthcare + still having to pay for your own healthcare too if you don't qualify for public healthcare. The UK spends less on public healthcare than the US.

https://www.commonwealthfund.org/pub...rspective-2019

I don't have health insurance. I don't qualify for a subsidy under Obamacare and a monthly plan w/fat deductible there would be $600 per month for me. I don't qualify for Medicaid either.

For just my ADD meds:

$300 new patient appointment
$60 new patient drug screen
$120 scrip appointment every 3 months
$100+ average for one month of generic prescription

= $2000 ish for one year of a "maintenance" medication that doesn't require any emergent care or actually to even see a doctor in person after the initial appointment

If you are an established patient then it should be a couple hundred less.

I'd hate to be living in a country with some of the _highest_ per capita health expenditure in the OECD, but among the _worst_ health outcomes, with a dumbass system that meant my country had the HIGHEST administration costs for health care (as opposed to, actual health care costs). I'd feel like a real asshat if I loved that system.

Many years ago I did a project on a new hospital system in a town in The middle of Pennsylvania. Right near this actually really cool looking church named after St Cyril. I believe it was build by nuns. You could see it from the town we were staying at and it looked like a huge medieval tower. But anyways, they built this massive state of the art hospital.

To support the hospital they had TWO identical buildings where every floor was packed with offices and cubicles for insurance, claims, and other administrative workers. We were working on them before anybody went in. I was shocked to stand on these floors at the sea of cubicles thinking what the actual **** do these people do all day.

Anyone who isnt a teenage sanders loving ******* knows this stuff is BS.

The bill you get is NOT what you are expected to pay. Legally, hospitals have to bill everyone the same (insurance or not). Those high bills are something they send to an insurance company and then receive a certain contractual agreed upon rate. If you dont have insurance your procedure will just be a write off

Do agree there is a ton of bloat in the system tho

I agree deeply with all these points.

"We're paying for poor people?" "we've always paid for poor people"

The extra costs are for yachts.

Problem is, I'm not sure getting rid of insurance and injecting a single payer system into the mix will solve it.

We need standardized pricing on everything, and it needs to be set at reasonable levels.

But you already do. Ever hear of medicare, medicaid, chip, etc? You spend as much publicly as countries with "free" healthcare, and then you have buy private insurance for yourself on top of it. You're taking it in both ends until someone cleans that chit up and brings in some transparency.

My premiums are free and pay a very low tax rate compared to Brit****s. My salary in the US is 2x what it would be in the UK for the same work. #winning.

The extra costs are for yachts.

Problem is, I'm not sure getting rid of insurance and injecting a single payer system into the mix will solve it.

We need standardized pricing on everything, and it needs to be set at reasonable levels.
I am 100% on board for that. Seems like we should at least be able to get upfront pricing (know the cost before you purchase) and some kind of "fair market pricing", even if it needs to be done by state, or by region.

It just isn't that simple because of how complex taxation is in general. Just in the US your ideal lowest tax burden state will vary depending on your income and family composition.

https://www.theguardian.com/money/20...e-australia-us

I don't think it is complicated by accident either. Imagine if instead of getting nickled and dimed all over you had one monthly total tax payment to fund all the different taxing authorities that are taking a bite out of you? As in imagine if we had actual transparency.

TX has long been thought of as a low tax state because there isn't a state income tax. However we have fairly hefty sales taxes, plenty of fees/extra costs (toll roads), and some of the highest property tax rates in the country.

Also remember when you look at those images that in the UK they can choose to purchase private coverage, but they aren't required to.

Re: long wait times

I've had to wait plenty in the US even with good insurance. But if countries with universal coverage wanted lower wait times they could increase taxes/spending in order to provide more doctors/clinics/hospitals.

Dunno what propaganda your corrupt government feeds you but that is certainly not the case here.

If I ring before 8am I will get an appointment that very same day. If I ring after I will get an appointment that week.

To those that say they don’t want their money going to the poor..... you seem perfectly happy with your money going towards bombs that kill poor people in other countries.
