Also how old is the clutch itself (if you are ridden your clutch for a long time it starts wearing a bit).

Its unlikely the cable itself (though for some reason it does grind on some cars more for just 1st and R).
I believe the 1st and R gear inside the box share a common ?synchro? but im not too clued up on that.
Opies transmission is auto

this. drain old fluid and add new. if still having issues likely bad transmission. had this happen to my tacoma. btw doing this on your own is a pain in the ass. and is kind of expensive to do at a shop.
