Any car guys? Car has issues in 1st and R

Recently ive noticed when i am at a dead stop and accelerate it is like someone is holding/tapping the brakes. it might jerk once or twice. Once moving everything is fine. Same thing in R. it does not happen all the time.

Is it worth trying to change the fluid? I believe i had it done a year(maybe even two) ago but I cant find the receipt. I had it changed because it was shifting really hard and the change did fix it

its a 2012 auto ford escape.

If its in 1st and Reverse then it seems like its the transmission.

Seems like the problem is that it’s a 12 Ford Escape

Is it an automatic?

The transmission is sealed and unless you are grinding gears for some reason, there is absolutely no reason to change the fluid. This is a 350 dollar fee charged by dealerships and sleazy mechanics to exploit ignorance through subtle fear mongering. Most cars can easily go their whole life without changing the tranny (giggity) fluid.

Even if your fluid did have some type of contaminate, I doubt it would manifest in the way you are explaining.

If the fluid keeps running low it is because of bad gaskets or something, which you should have fixed ASAP. Does it leave puddles anywhere?

Are you certian you dont have a sticking caliper on your brake system? Is this happening on a hill? Some newer vehicles have hill assist which locks your brakes on hills until you actually press the gas pedal.

BS. Like I said i already changed it maybe 1-2 years ago because of extremely hard shifting and the change fixed it. Tons of people saying fluid change helps some issues.

Fluid isn't going to cause a stutter like that, I don't think. I'm going to assume you are describing a misfire?

What did it look like when you poked your head around in there? Probably something simple like an EGR hose leak or bad plugs/wires (which are due to change anyway). Guess #2 would be a stuck caliper, but I think you would notice that by the burning smell.

I mean it could be something with brakes. Today backing up it was like I was tapping both the gas and brakes at the same time. jerk jerk jerk jerk. I hit the brakes for real, gave it a second and it corrected it self.

Sounds like something in transmission sticking. I’m not sure on the exact logistics of the transmission in your car but I would guess clogged filter , bad shift solenoid or maybe even a damaged gear/band.

Might be the TC going out too. This is assuming auto.

Change the fluid and filter before you do anything srs.

And if you were having a misfire you would get a check engine light and code. This wouldn’t stop by shifting either.

Also this. The only ford I’d buy is a truck. I know a guy with a ford tarus and he had to pay a **** load for tranny and engine mounts and his transmission started to leak......... on a 5 year old car........

I doubt that would result only in a stutter at slow speed. I'm betting vacuum/ignition errry time, but you're the tradie.

I was thinking it could be electronic also. is the TC more then a rebuild or cheaper? I dont hear any clunking or anything. I just dont want to take it to the shop and tell me I need $2000...to do a major repair that has like a $100 solenoid on it thats dead.

It's your transmission. Your vehicle is getting old, congrats on not maintaining it. This shouldn't be happening until at least 10 years in or over 200k miles

As long as the issue is consistent and they can replicate it quickly, you can probably get it diagnosed and an estimate for 200 or even less. Again though, it is pretty well known that industry is shady af.

Changing the fluid isn't going to solve the problem. It's impossible to tell unless you can access the data pids and see what is really going on. It may have DTC's in the transmission if you have a scanner that can read trans.

Post on a Ford forum, you'll have hundreds of Ford obsessed enthusiasts willing to help you.

You also need to provide a lot more information, such as automatic/manual. If manual, put it into 1st up hill, hold clutch all the way down and let the car roll back, then use the engage point of the clutch to hold and then move the car up the hill, once you get going use the gas. Then do the same with reverse.

Don't look into any fluid changes, it's very unlikely that's the problem

Nah. TC is normally 400-600$ on a car like that for labor. All that needs to be done is to pull the tranny back enough and replace it. If your fluid gets old enough it will cause problems and make your TC act up.

I know a lot basic tranny stuff. I owned 2 2nd gen dodge rams before I bought my f250.

Believe me , a filter that’s too dirty can cause the fluid to circulate poorly and make your vehicle not move at all. It’s not necessarily a internal failure. My aunts dodge did that.

Normally a bad solenoid doesn’t cause harsh shifting but rather being stuck in limp mode. You’ll spin out in first but once again that’s on a dodge 46re.

Your solenoid should be accessible either underneath the filter or somewhere else on the throttle body. If you have a govern pressure sensor ( connects to the solenoid in some way normally) it could also be that. If your transmission gets hot that’s normally the first electronic thing to go.

Once again , before you take it anywhere drop the pan and change the filter and check your fluid for shavings. It’s normal for the magnet to have a little debree on it But if your fluid looks glittery tour is over boyo.

Dropping the pan is easy. When you put it back on use a good gasket and torque it down to spec in a cris cross pattern.

You should have a drain plug on a car that new for the fluid. Even my Super duty does.

Also just to add this is a good idea as well. Newer cars are heavily electronic. definitely get a scan tool and look for tranny codes ( no homo).

This is terrible advice. Lubricants of any kind will break down and lose their lubricity and viscosity. Their lifespan is finite and on problematic transmissions like the OPs that would only make the issues worse.

Lol at thinking that you don't change fluids ever, they are filled with gears that are metal on metal, you're gonna get some metal contamination from that contact period

If its only in those 2 gears check your fluid (though its unlikely since it should cause problems on all gears)
Also how old is the clutch itself (if you are ridden your clutch for a long time it starts wearing a bit).

Its unlikely the cable itself (though for some reason it does grind on some cars more for just 1st and R).
I believe the 1st and R gear inside the box share a common ?synchro? but im not too clued up on that.
