Try being up a 120ft poplar with no drop zone and just when youve got it down to wood youve gotta bust out the 880 to drop 3000lb pieces into an impact block at 70ft, also while tied into something that can fail unpredictably. Oh and working within primary power lines, that mean instant death if touched. Statistically treework is far more dangerous than bitch towercell work. Fall from 100' or 1000' it's not going to make much difference except from the higher range you're going to realize and think about what's happening on the way down. Otherwise you take precautions. As long as you're smart and stay focused you should be fine unless something unexpected happens like a plane runs into you, but that's rare. I'm sure the first climb or two you are probably just tagging along and watching because most people would be useless. I was told by some career person that was the kind of job I should do but I'mscared of hights.

Im not a tower climber, but ive seen dozens of guys give up on my line of work because they thought the heights wouldn’t bother them. If the height scares you theres no way you can do the job safely. One time i had this new guy who thought he knew everything, hed never been in a bucket so i gave him a harness and let him give it a try he gets up about 15 feet lol and freezes, so i decide to check his ego by taking over the controls from the ground, brought him up to 75 feet lmao he was screaming like he was gonna die. Dick move but ****in hilarious

that being said I do chit like decommissions on towers rated unsafe to climb

try taking a giant gas axe and burning through steel plate reinforcement ran all the way up the legs 4 sections above the guy wire line, deconstructing each section and offloading it to a gin pole, the whole tower twisting and turning as we lower each section feeling like it's gonna collapse any second -- knowing it wouldn't be the first tower to collapse.

tower industry has one of the highest death per capita rates in north america, if not the highest


have also had to reinforce booms that were sagging like 3 ft, used a 4 ton come-along to hoist it back in place, drilled some holes for the new steel to reinforce, took an entire 2000lb radio pack and the pipe it was hoisted on -- moved it to the inside of the tower to off load weight from the newly reinforced booms, then run all new lines.

those booms were way over loaded and were ready to fall off


i can imagine rigging trees is a rush too but you don't know the half of what a hardened steel crew does in the tower industry

I also had to dismantle and cut into pieces a massive fiberglass dome, a 6' satellite inside of it, and the steel platform it sat on off the side of the cn tower antenna at 1400', 400 feet higher than the guys in this video, we did it with all rope rigging, no hoists just tied a munter hitch and cut the steel into smaller pieces. wind at that height is insane.
