If you don't give your body the proper nutrition, protein, vitamins, carbs, fats etc. Then you will not get the optimal results if you work out.
If you want to push it to the extreme and just drink 2500 kcal in olive oil a day and nothing else, pretty sure you'd end up in the hospital despite reaching your daily calorie needs.

But diet is not complicated. Eat a balanced diet. Stay away from a ton of deep fried chit, snacks, chocolate and other crap.

High sugar and high fat diet.

Sugar increases insulin, increasing glucose absorption and decreasing glucose consumption.

Less energy being burned means the fat is also stored for later use.

Eating a surplus of calories is what has made people fat. Time to put the cake down tubby.

It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven."

Obviously if you ate lots of it, then it would be hard not to be in a surplus due to how calorie dense it is but overall diet has to be taken into consideration

The first law of thermodynamics is not the be all end all of nutrition. Recognising that 1000 cals/day of vegetable oil plus normal diet will make you fatter than 1000 cals/day of coconut oil plus normal diet is a start. It also doesn't absolve people of responsibility for their obesity.

Sure, on an individual level CICO, or IOW the individual is out of balance and is consuming more calories than they are able to burn.

Personally seem to be predisposed to being fat. Was fat/obese most of my life and made a real effort at many different fixes- if it had a "moment" chances are I've done it. For me it came down to basically starving and a lot of exercise for about a year (started about 800-1000, gradually ramped up cals and exercise). Need to starve some more right now, but haven't yet.

So why isn't that the entire story IMO?

Overall I think intake trumps expenditure. See: highly active hunter gatherers who were found to utilize about the same number of calories as lazy modern westerners.
The similarity in TEE among Hadza hunter-gatherers and Westerners suggests that even dramatic differences in lifestyle may have a negligible effect on TEE, and is consistent with the view [4]–[7], [16] that differences in obesity prevalence between populations result primarily from differences in energy intake rather than expenditure.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3405064/

Also fat is a metabolically active tissue, not just a storage facility for excess calories. Our fat is also used to store toxins and some vitamins/hormones.

Another random theory I've encountered was that our bodies are creating more fat because we are exposed to more toxins and this is how the body is coping.

If you think all fats are equal because they're all 9 calories/gram, you are stupid and wrong. It isimpossibleto calculate your TDEE, and qualitatively what you eat has a huge affect on TDEE.

That's one thing. Also thyroid function is a big one, but like I said before no one actually knows how all these bodily processes and hormones interact.

It's because on average (as of 2000, so surely more now) "Males consume 2,475 calories daily and females consume 1,833 calories"

Meanwhile, the average 5'4 woman needs between 1800-2200 depending on activity level, and lettuce be serial here most people today are 100% sedentary

Table for 5'4, 126 lb (healthy size) woman's caloric needs
18–30 years 1800–2400 calories
31–40 years 1800–2200 calories
41–50 years 1800–2200 calories
For a 5'10" 154lb man (healthy size) it is
18–30 years 2400–3000 calories
31–40 years 2400–2800 calories
41–50 years 2200–2800 calories
That means that the average sedentary female is consuming 33 calories a day over their need, and the average sedentary male is consuming 75 above their needs. This equates to 4 pounds per year for a woman who is 5'4" and weighs 126 lb, and 9 pounds per year for a 5'10" man who weighs 154 lb.

It's not hard to see why there are simply not many people at what you would consider a healthy weight since the average person is already consuming more calories than would allow them to maintain that weight.

Yes excess calories make people fat. But oxidised vegetable oils are extremely toxic in the body and will effect hormonal and metabolic function, increasing inflammation which will all contribute to weight gain and poor body composition

I think this is a larger piece of the story than the common idea that fat people are lazy and gorge on large amounts of high calorie garbage food. Sure, some probably do. But 40% of the population? Much more likely that just a little overeating on vacation or holiday gradually adds up over time.

Exercise is good for just about everything related to human health and body composition, but food is likely the main culprit if you are just looking at obesity.

The oils: I'm speaking of corn oil, sunflower oil, and safflower oil, particularly when heated.

The insulin hypothesis of obesity hasn't actually stood up under trial AFAIK.

What a bullchit link, just complete bias and immaturity over a single study that they interpret in one direction.

When you break it down, the two competing theories (It's ALL about calories Vs. It's ALL about hormones) are both right and wrong. It's a combination of both, this is why high-fat sugary/carby foods like pizza or ice cream are the worse. The calories are there AND the insulin/hormones are there, both in bad directions.

Don't tell me a big fat 1,000 calorie steak is no different than a 1,000 calorie frostie, though. Come on.

HFCS is particularly awful in that the human body deals with fructose differently than it does glucose. Every single human cell can utilize glucose for energy. So, you eat a big plate of spaghetti, if it's too big at some point the massive insulin spike with it is going to shuttle calories away to be stored as fat. You can work against this by walking after you eat, training hard, energy being stored in your muscles and whatever else. Fructose? That can not be used by the human body. No cell can use it. Fructose, every calorie of it must be shuttled to the liver and be converted to glucose. The liver can only do so much. Eat an apple? Ok, you got some fructose there, it's also nutrient dense, lots of fiber to slow things down and give you time to process it, not a big deal. Drink that 20 liter pure HFCS and chemical soda that has x8 the fructose of that apple and no fiber to slow things down? Now your liver struggles, especially if you're downing a high-calorie fat burger alongside that soda. Fat is immediately stored, often right to your internal organs like the liver, welcome to pre-diabetes.

As for this "It's ONLY about calories! Calories! Calories!!!" fuk that as well, don't tell me 100 calories of broccoli is no different than 100 calories of soda. It's fuking ridiculous and stupid and makes no sense. Broccoli is nutrient dense, 100 calories of it will satiate you more, it's slowly digested and gives your body time to process it, etc... 100 calories of soda is high in HFCS, immediately fuks your hormones, spikes insulin, fuks with ghrelin and is just awful.

These calorie-Only guys, they also live in these stupid bubbles, as if dialing back calories 1,000 a day to lose 2/lb a week for months on end has no effect on your test levels or cravings. Total bullchit. Then they point to some trainer, doing who knows what behind the scenes, who eats a pizza diet and loses weight. Congratulations, but that won't work for normal people who aren't dedicated to training, who aren't probably on sauce and what not. Some guy working out 4/hour a day? Carb up, brother. You need them. The average guy who is lucky to hit the gym 4/week and has an office job? You will not need nearly as many carbs.

Want to drop weight? Stop eating constantly. Eat less when you do. Don't eat if you're not hungry. Cut out the chit from your diet.

Americans/Western-diet is wrong because we eat too much, we eat too often and we eat the wrong foods. Our calories are too fuking high, sure, but we're also constantly feeding, from the 3+ meals a day, constant snacks, drinking HFCS drinks throughout the day -- our bodies are constantly in fat storing mode, from the hormones, we're constantly eating because we're always hungry, from the hormones, and we eat and eat and eat and get fatter as a result.

This big IF craze, one reason it tends to work for many people -- you give your body a chance to actually access it's fat stores. You skip breakfast, sometimes lunch, you're not snacking, you're not drinking bullchit sodas throughout the day. Insulin levels drop, your body breaks down the fat stored throughout it for the energy it needs as it was intended.

That article is crap in any event, just a zealot looking at data and interpreting it as they want it and insulting throughout as if they know everything. I wouldn't go back there for more information, personally.

Your post above: Fat people are constantly grazing. Yes, they are. They do because of the bad habits they've built and because they eat garbage that does not induce satiety. Weeks, months or years of bad eating has created hormone imbalances, they are actually resistant to the hormone LEPTIN which causes satiety. They eat, they don't feel full, they eat more and more and over time they get more and more fuked on a hormonal level and this is why people tend to only go in one direction with weight gain.

Sometimes they take steps to undo this but if they don't address the underlying hormonal problems with insulin, ghrelin, leptin and such - there is a big reason why so many diets FAIL in the long term. They drop weight but the underlying problems persist and about 95% of the time end up regaining the weight with their CICO diets that don't address hormones.

Ask a CICO zealot why there is NEVER a Biggest Loser Reunion. Nope. Not once. In fact, pretty much all of the contestants and in several caseseven the trainersend up back being big fat people. Why is that, hmm? I thought it's all about calories? I guess all these people who we fuking watch go through inhuman levels of mental endurance are ALL fuking weak willed *******s all of a sudden??
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I can't imagine what the obesity numbers are going to look like in about a year from now. I expect after the 2020 quarantine spring/summer AND the winter of 2020 where people will likely be hibernating and living off fast food that by summer 2021 its going to be outrageous.

I agree mate but all it comes down to is calories out and calories in. If a person does eat a bad diet then like you say it would effect functions in the body. This would then more than likely lead to the person being less active due to feeling like crap and reducing the energy they expend

Weight and inactivity won't do your knees any favors, but another factor is that those garbage oils are terrible about causing inflammation, which has a host of non-good sides associated with it.

Some of that is how they're used. I often eat a nice fatty salad that I drizzle with some olive oil. I don't cook with olive oil, though. Heating it up, for that oil, is the issue. I generally cook/fry with avocado or coconut oil if I'm having eggs or something.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

So particular foods can make you fat. You've literally gone full circle here.

Miscers think they're so clever for stating the first law of thermodynamics as if the issue isn't more complicated than that.

First post = all calories are equal

Second post = some calories are better than others

You said some foods are more likely to reduce the amolunt of energy a person expends, thus reducing calories out and making them fatter.

It's true that it's not simply CICO, but trying to explain it in more depth would probably be too much in one go for the average person.

It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven."

Getting fat? Stop looking at fats and oils, look at HFCS, sugars, processed carbs and the ridiculous amounts the average American eats.

We're fat because of insulin, same reason type 2 diabetes has skyrocketed here and any other place that adopts our eating habits/style.
Wot. Fats have more calories than carbs and protein per gram by more than double. You have to look at every angle, you can’t just leave one out.
