Discuss: Is it the soy that has made us all so fat?

Actually refined vegetable oils in general.

It's a theory I heard before and maybe you have too. I came across the pro-Paleo blog (Mark's Daily Apple) way back which went big on PUFAs and the Omega 3/Omega 6 imbalance in the Standard American Diet.

Then I caught a JRE interview over the weekend with a pro-carnivore diet guy. I'm not a "one true path" kind of gal, nor do I buy into whatever the latest fad is, mainly because BTDT.

His info on vegetable oils seems strong though. He shared graphics re:consumption rates of vegetable oils in relation to rising obesity rates. Pointed out that other dietary components have remained flat (eggs, dairy, red meat, grains) or trended downward (sugars) while vegetable oil consumption has continued upward.

Soybean Oil- they charge for a labeled graph:

Canola Oil- same, $$:

Obesity trend:

Why does it matter which particular food is making people fatter? Dr. Saladino claims that vegetable oil cause fat cells to become larger vs. multiply until these bloated fat cells break open and this creates inflammation in the body (aka Metabolic Syndrome).

Metabolic Syndrome prevalence in the US is estimated at about 33% and is correlated with increased mortality.

Caveats: correlation|causation, multifactorial condition, epidemiology, etc.

no it's the abundance, availability, marketing, and established routine/acceptance of cheap high calorie food and drink offerings from restaurants everywhere.

i'm a Gen-Xer. when i was growing up, we didn't eat, drink, and snack 24/7/365 like these chubby millennials. if we ate out it was a rare treat. and we walked everywhere and played sports. we didn't sit at home and play on the computer and video games and stream movies and TV shows.

Dunno about all that (didn’t read)

All I can say for sure is fast food isn’t transparent about the nutritional info regarding fat/calorie content. For example they literally pour liquid margarine just to cook chicken on the grill. Imagine what they’re putting in burgers and fries

PFAS are chemicals in most fast food wrappers as well and known to contribute to obesity

You're overthinking it. It's the sedentary lifestyle mixed with people eating non filling foods that have a lot of calories. I'm sure vegetable oil, HFCS and a bunch of other things are contributing but the what it all boils down to is more calories in than out

In terms of diet yes it is mostly PUFA vegetable/seed oils. No oneeverate this chit until 50 or so years ago. Grains aren't ideal but humans have been eating them for millennia. Veg/seed oils were originally industrial lubricants, and food giants decided they would use them for a better bottom line at the expense of public health, they are poison not meant for human consumption. I remember seeing on the side of a McDonald's truck 'We turn our used cooking oil into biodiesel' as if that's a good thing (obviously soyboys and idiot hippies think it's wonderful) and I was like wtf they're literally feeding people chit meant for heavy machinery.

I think the anti-saturated fat fake science meme from the 90s which still persists to this day is a deliberate agenda to decrease men's testosterone but that's a slightly different issue.

These.

I'm sure the chit tier oils, sugars, and soys aren't helping, but weight gain has never been a rocket science.

Between phones, consoles, pcs, tvs, and all other electronic entertainment, Americans are all just sitting on their asses all day, shoveling addictive foods down their gullets. When people do get exercise, it's some half-assed workout like 10 min of walking. Sure, it's better than nothing, but it's not exactly doing a whole lot either, especially when the inevitable justification for eating even more junk comes later in the day with the old, "Well I worked out today so I can eat these 5 oreos!"

It's sad, but what can you do? Force people on a strict eating schedule? Regulate the food industry through sugar taxes and the like? Maybe idk, but I don't see it getting any better anytime soon.

i also blame refined sugar. fat was demonized for years but the real evil is refined sugar. it's in everything now you really have to read every label.

Avoid the White Devils - Laird Hamilton

There are four ingredients everyone ought to avoid, or at least greatly restrict. They’re what fitness expert and author Paul Chek calls the white devils: flour, dairy, salt, and sugar. Bread and other products that use refined flour are high on the glycemic index and shouldn’t be a staple. Milk is full of sugar, causes intolerance, and is overrated for bone health. We get far too much salt thanks to our processed foods. Then there’s refined sugar, the most important to cut back on – and the trickiest. First of all, our sweet tooth goes back millions of years to ancestors who didn’t have enough good fat in their diet. As soon as you cut sugar out of your diet, you’ll lose the craving for the stuff entirely and won’t even be able to handle a regular soda. Another reason sugar is hard to avoid is that it’s in everything – it’s even in salad dressings. My rule is to straight-up avoid processed sugar, especially high-fructose corn syrup, which is hidden in so many foods.

Saladino mentions HFCS and says that it doesn't create satiety the way that other sugars do. However consumption has been trending downward.

I'm not sure what Joe's idiocy has to do with anything. He openly claims it. The thing is that he asks questions and lets people say whatever they want for more or less as long as they want.

Pretty much anything made from corn or soy is unnecessary at best and poison at worst. Yet drive through middle America and that is all you see growing because its what we subsidize. Clown world.

It's been a while since I've seen the studies/articles, but soy is one of those ingredients in EVERYTHING that's terrible for you, along with high fructose corn syrup. The issues seem to arise when children are fed soy and can particularly fuck up their hormonal system. The articles pointed out to earlier puberty in females, but did not really outline an outcome for males. But anecdotally, you can assume that high soy content in baby formula could be a contributing factor to the (literal) lo-test results in young men today.

Also makes you wonder if people being treated for chemical imbalances are also the same ones consuming soy lattes, etc.

Getting fat? Stop looking at fats and oils, look at HFCS, sugars, processed carbs and the ridiculous amounts the average American eats.

We're fat because of insulin, same reason type 2 diabetes has skyrocketed here and any other place that adopts our eating habits/style.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

it's not soy. asians eat soy all the time and have the healthiest and least obese bodies out of everyone

soy sauce is a staple in asian cuisine. used in everything rice, soup, noodles, vegetables, fish, poultry, etc.

Single mothers are of children that should have been swallowed.

This results in generations of kids that are poor diets and have no understanding of how important food preparation is. Yes, it’s hard work to manage your diet, simps.

I lol at all the fatties lifting now. Bunch of blotmaxxed toads

Cheers

Well I do think that HFCS is better avoided and that generally a diet higher in sugars (particularly eaten in isolation) can lead to a higher body weight. I don't think it is as simple as an insulin response that causes intake of sugars to make our bodies fatter. IME the blood sugar swings increase hunger which increases calorie intake.

The insulin hypothesis of obesity hasn't actually stood up under trial AFAIK.

A lot of diabetics in my family so I've been all over the map on insulin/glycemic index among other things as the messaging has evolved.

No particular food makes you fat. Only thing that makes you fat is consistently eating in a surplus of calories regardless of the food source

It's absolutely not the same thing. Butter is sat fat, is good. Vegetable oil is PUFA, is bad. Simply saying calories out vs in is true, but is massive oversimplification.

This is just an absolute retard tier take. Eating only HFCS fried in soybean oil is fine as long as calories in matches calories out? What you consume has no affect on the calories out part of the equation? No affect on bodily processes? No affect on hormone levels?

I think that's probably overcomplicating it. What Hogan and Muzzle said, we're inactive and out of touch with what we're actually consuming.

Oil is massively high in calories so if you ate nothing but oil then it would be impossible to not be in a surplus but yes in simple terms, the only thing that makes you fat is eating more than you burn
