First, they have to interpret correctly.
Then they have to come up with something helpful.

I just don't think going to an office for 50 minutes every week or month is going to do it. My lady went to see someone for anxiety and post partum depression-difficult chit. I think the act of going to see someone probably did more for her than anything, and not anything the therapist actually said.

With that said, absolutely go see a therapist if you're in a mental crisis. Even if they don't actually solve the problem, they do provide the tools to hang on till you can get a handle on things.

Yea I feel like just speaking to literally anyone is better than nothing as you end up talking through whatever the issue is and eventually talk yourself to a solution. I did that a lot myself at least.

It's just sad reading some posts here and I'm the type of person that wants to see people happy.

My friend took his life a year and a bit ago and it hit hard. I try my best to understand people and help but a lot of these replies have opened my eyes. I appreciate it all and all the best to everyone

Physical therapists are the most important. Anything else is useless. I went into my professor's office during office hours one time because he offered his students a counseling session to discuss anything in life we needed to discuss; he said it was okay, we could discuss it with him. I brought up an issue I was trying to figure out for a couple years and was having no success with despite trying and failing hundreds of times and he looked at me after all this talking I had done and letting me speak, I said something along the lines of "so what do you think I should do?"

I'll never forget it, the son of a bitch let me speak for two or three minutes uninterrupted, looked at me with these cold, apathetic, empty eyes and simply said. "I don't know" and left me there hanging without another word until I think I eventually said "alright, thanks i'll see you next tuesday" or some chit and walked out in disbelief

Fuking therapists lmfao. I would come here to the misc to post about issues 100,000/100,000 times before I would pay a 'therapist' shts a fuking joke like no other. There are bros here who will give it to you straight and push you along the path you need to take if you ask them in earnest. I've seen it thousands of times here. There will be some funny replies but then there is a dude who sees you need help and will provide it and give you the truth; it's just a matter of taking the advice and understanding what you must do. Don't need to pay some random quack. There's no need for a shrink if you're about self improvement, have a never give up mentality to the fullest fcking extent your mind can hold itself to, and continue to learn. You could simply come here or anywhere on the internet and learn with the right attitude and approach. The web has everything now. And if you can't find your answer, you'll find it in meditation, books, maybe take a course. I think it all boils down to active searching and trial and error. I respect physical therapists I have the utmost respect for them but shrinks? They're some fuking losers. Straight up the fakest motherfukers there ever could be. They get paid to listen and pretend they have answers to your complex situation that may take years, a chunk of your lifetime even, to figure out. Fuking hate those fakeass bitches srs

You're not wrong, but speaking to someone can actually make you reflect on yourself in a way most people wouldn't do naturally. It can lead to you changing things about yourself that could help you fix your poor diet, sleep, exercise, and vices.

I'd argue that therapists are more useful to people WITHOUT legit chemical or otherwise physical imbalance. Therapy is more someone helping you learn about yourself in a neutral setting, and then finding ways to improve yourself.. So yeah, in the end, the only person that can help you is yourself, but therapy can be a good way to find out "how" to help yourself.

Most people genuinely do not self reflect, or they are horrible at it.

Yes, and celebrities are known to be the most stable and balanced people on the planet.

True therapy starts with self introspection. Allow yourself to accept blame for things that happen in your life and not pass it to external forces. Work on the parts of you that you feel are lacking. If you find you feel the wrong way about certain things, try to figure out why it is that you feel these ways and correct them. There is a LOT you can do without having to pay some over-educated pill-pusher (psychiatrist) or over-educated listener (psychologist) to tell you things that you know most about yourself.

Think about it, everything they know about you comes from the things you already know and have told them!

I went ONCE and still regret it. After I explained numerous complex social issues I'm going through, she offered sage advice such as, "I always say that honesty is the best policy" and "be thankful you're not a woman who are still second class citizens in society!"

She still calls me asking to set up future sessions.

Because egos and pride are a bish. It's also hard for people to admit fault and that there is room for improvement.

Went to weekly counseling for over a year by myself and then also with my girlfriend and I can honestly say that it is one of, if not the best decisions I ever made. Used to be a hardheaded phuck that was stuck in his ways and that caused a lot of tension in my professional and personal life. Someone breaking down how much of a **** you are really opens your eyes to your flaws and drastically improves your life and way of thinking and perceiving things. It has DRASTICALLY improved my relationship with my gf, opened new career doors and overall made me a better and happier person. Highly recommend it to any friends that are going through chit themselves.

IMO even if you have no issues what so ever, if you can afford it, I'd still go. Why not? Sometimes it's just about seeing things from a different point of view. A professional point of view.

I think the first step before all that is eliminating what is toxic from your life such as

Excessive porn, toxic people, toxic job, alcohol, drugs, prescription drugs, time wasting activities, overeating, masterbating all the time, reading the news etc

And trade it for

Exercise, meditation, yoga, cleaner eating, cardio, reading positive things, watching positive movies and videos, hanging with good people, finding a cool hobby

That's what I've done and I'm miles ahead of most people and got everything in order in my life.

Peace.

Why do you think these celebs who have access to the best care in the world, still end up ending it?

I’m headed down the road to alcoholism but therapy wouldn’t really help me. I have a bunch of friends for sure and ones that would help me out in a fight np, but Not really the dear diary type.
Takes a lot more than having solid friends to solve the problem.

I have a friend who is having alcohol troubles. Used to be a high level athlete and misses his body. I got him out once a week or so in the summer to play tennis. We loved it and he wouldn't drink that day. He vents to me and we come up with solutions (he just wants to be fit and in a solid workout routine again).

Doesn't matter. Every day he doesn't plan something active the first thing he does after work or class is crack a beer.

That being said, as you get older you realize it's not healthy to invest too much into other peoples problems or it will drag you down as well.

No psychologist or psychiatrist in the world can take you into the depths of introspection about the nature of the human condition the way a decent GMiscer thread can

It’s best to seek professional help if you have gone so far as planning your own demise. For those that have fleeting thoughts, professional help may feel excessive. Some may not want that on their record. I may be wrong, but if you file any insurance claim for therapy/prescription drugs, it will be on your record permanently unless you pay out of pocket and specifically request this not go in your medical record. Once it’s there, it ain’t coming off...especially with the proclivity of electronic health records. If you ever get in a situation where your mindset would get called in to question (think court case), it may be used against you.

Personally, I’d be reluctant to immediately jump to that unless it was maybe just a therapy session or two and I make thise non disclosure requests. If you’re suicidal and are actively planning how to end your life, you’ll need more than that. Definitely seek help.

This isn’t to talk anyone out of counseling. This is purely my opinion and I would absolutely do what feels best for you.
