I always want to do this but have such a hard time letting go of my inner editor and systematizer to get to a productive stream of consciousness

Not experience with free software, but went looking to try and jog my memory about what others use...turns out Microsoft is offering a free, online version of their Office suite. It might be worth looking into.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/micr...TGT=AFF_221109

As far as preparing the document, here is what Amazon says on it:

https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200645680

For your pictures, insert them directly into the document. You'll create chapter headings and use the "headings" preset to create an in-document link. When all the headings are set, you create a table of contents directly in the file. Word will do this with a specific instruction. The TOC will be used by Amazon's program to generate the TOC in the ebook.

Once you have your document, you'll create an account with Amazon.
https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US

Once you do that, you'll go to your bookshelf and select the option for kindle ebook under "create a new book." the instructions from there are pretty straight forward. Your first book might be a bit of a learning curve to get used to it. Make sure you download the ebook and test it when Amazon is done converting it. After you get the hang of it, it's easy to upload new books.

One thing to be aware of if you're putting images in your book: they will increase the file size. Amazon offers 2 different royalty options: 35% and 70%. If you select 70%, Amazon does deduct a delivery fee from your royalties if the ebook is over a certain size, but there is no deduction for delivery if you choose 35%. Can't remember, but it is either 1 or 2 MB. When you get to the pricing page while setting up your book, it will show you how much will be deducted if your book is big enough. A few pictures might not be enough to make the 35% option worth it, but you never know. Just pay attention when you get to the pricing page.

I hit a brick wall two days ago (metaphorically speaking) and only wrote half a chapter, then half a chapter yesterday. I should be on chapter 18 today if I was on schedule, but I'm halfway through chapter 17.

Edit: I just finished chapter 17, now I need to do chapter 18 to be back on track again.

I typed chapters 17 and 18 yesterday, so I’m caught up. I’m taking today off. Just six more chapters until I’m done.

I finished chapter 22, I'm at 47,599 total words. I've got two chapters left, 2,401 words left to type by the 30th. I had the villain defeated at the end of chapter 21, but had to write a contingency plan for her to break out, because I still had three chapters left. The ending is going to be totally different now from what I planned initially.

I'm almost done, after today's chapter, I have less than a hundred words until I reach 50,000 words. One chapter left! After tomorrow, I'm done!

I finished with 50,906 words! Chapter 24 is completed. This is only the second time I've completed Nanowrimo, the first time was in 2011 when I wrote "Planet of the Titans"

I'm going to keep up the pace and write short stories in December that I can send to magazines, then in January through mid-February I'm going to write a 75,000 word novel. I'm going to keep up the pace of writing 2,100 words a day, six days a week.
