Oil is very cyclical so that’s definitely a consideration. But if you’re good at what you do, you probably don’t have much to worry about as it’s the low performers who will be the main targets when things get choppy

I started in 2014 right as oil crashed and am making more right now than the previous six years, still don’t even know what it’s like to be at the top of a cycle

I'm currently in the forestry sector and am interested in making a switch to another resource.

Except those remote locations usually have only 3 sloots in town whom aren't that good looking and have been slooting everyone in town for years :/

Yes sir, Canadian. I was a timber cruiser for a while and am now enrolled in a B. Sc. to open doors for management level positions.

Yes I'd be willing to go in as a tradie if the pros outweigh those of going to Uni for a new field.

I had a crew for 20+ years and being that atmosphere was fun when I was a young guy, now that I’m in my mid-forties I wouldn’t want to deal with employing tradies ever again.

One guy always has an excuse for not showing up, one guy is always late, one guy is always hungover dragging his ass, one guy is whining etc... These days I start and finish my days when I want as I no longer have to keep a steady line of work going to cover overhead and payroll.

Misc rips on tradies but I am exactly where I want to be in my life and wouldn’t want to be doing anything else, ded srs.

Remote jobs around small towns sure, Canada tends to have huge camp accommodations at our O&G sites and those can have thousands of people in one spot. The chit the trades get up to, I've probably heard / seen it all at this point

B. Sc. will definitely open up management level positions, entry level for sure and maybe intermediate if you have applicable experience. I started typing something out but this is a big topic with many different facets, high level outline would be splitting management into overall Project Management, QA / QC, Health / Safety / Environment, and Project Controls. But there's Contractor vs Client stuff as well, working in the city versus working in the field, etc etc. Feel free to PM if you want

Ironworker in Local 86. You can be the judge of my skill level. Washed out after 2.5 years to go to Alaska and work on fishing boats for a year to save money for college.

Dudes who get injured and work in the office aren't tradies anymore despite union membership. They are officecels.
