I'd say that's a sign lol. I didn't have one until I was like 27 and bought my first house. And I still do that laundry thing. Come to think of it, I still do a lot of things I did when I was poor.

I've noticed that people who used to be poor, then get decent jobs, tend to hoard everything, especially old clothes. Then their house or apartment is full of clutter.

Might try day trading a bit with no success. Or drop a bunch of money in some stock they know (Apple! ********!). Passive investing, making money work for you , etc are pretty new concepts to them

I remember one time I ate a bowl of cereal with salt instead of sugar because I thought it was sugar and not salt. I ate them s-words anyway because had I thrown it away, I'd have gotten whooped.

I use grocery bags for my lunch. My containers don't fit in those cooler bags unless it's a really big one. Might look poverty but who gives af. It works.

Poverty vacation - going to some chit tier beach in Hilton Head or Florida once a year and bum around on the sand all day for a week. If you are even poorer replace that with like Gatlinburg or Great Wolf Lodge

wealthier people have lake houses, ski lodges, etc or travel to places like europe

I struggle to think of any people i know who would have the brains to invest in apple etc and not know about index funds like Vanguard. If this is what you mean by passive investing.

a sign of someone who isnt poor now, but grew up poor. Wealthy people arent so intimidated and insecure about status to have to show it with a car. They realize the best use of money is to make it work for you, and one of the worst ways to waste it is on a vehicle. They understand marketing, and know there is zero difference in performance between a Toyota and a BMW. Or a 2020 model and a lightly used 2016.

Indoor furniture outside your house and outdoor furniture inside your house.

You have 7 cars on your property but only one complete set of tires.

I have a ton of friends who keep all their money in savings accounts like plebes, or chase stocks (usually older people are guiltier of the latter). Fortunately, the benefits of a vanguard fund are more well known today than years ago

-Mom using pen & paper (cause we didn't have a calculator) while grocery shopping to stay under whatever cash she had
-Rolling change to get enough gas so dad could make it to work till he got paid again
-Laundry mat to do laundry
-Not being able to play sports/do stuff cause parents couldn't afford
-Never going on vacation...literally went on 2 and my parents took out a loan for the 2nd one

Things I do now, because of growing up low-income.....I make just shy of 6 figures and my wife makes only $12k/year less than I do.
-Check price tags
-Conserve water
-Shove as much in the washer as I can
-Buy discount brands/cheap option
-Wear clothes till they rip/are crap
-Hoard crap...im getting better about this though
-Save, just to look at the amount in the bank.

I grew up pretty coddled/sheltered but I know that I came from a working class.

Stuff like using plastic butter containers as tupperware or not spending money on getting a drink when hitting up McDonald's was something I remembered my mother and grandmother doing when I was growing up.

My family has always been thrifty. My aunt is from the deep south and during her career in the Federal Government she was making $160,000+ but she would still shop at the Goodwill. Retired she makes more in pension than most American households and she still penny pinches. I think it's more to some generational habits though.

Hanging blankets over doorways to parts of the unit to keep the heat in because the landlord quit fixing the street-facing windows that the neighborhood kids kept throwing rocks through.

Adding a pan of boiling water to a bathtub full of cold water.

Sh*tting into a hole in the ground while sitting on a dresser with a hole punched through the top because you live in a tent in the woods with your alcoholic parent.

Heating up Beefaroni in a pan on a single hotplate and then wiping the pan with bread to clean it because no running water.

Using a cheap Styrofoam cooler to store ice, and then when the ice melts using the water to brush your teeth and when the water gets real gross using it as a toilet because no facilities.

Running down to a pond and jumping in every morning before school to get clean and fix bed head even when freezing fukking ass.

Sometimes pooping in the water when taking above morning dip.

Leaving a blow dryer on and hanging from the corner of the room while taking morning dip because no heater or insulation.

Constantly getting interrupted while pooping outside because no bathroom.

Being stoked af to find a partially full bag of dried peas in the back of a cabinet as a little kid.

Good times, though, srs.

I do this to this day too. If and when I get extra money, the wife and I always talk about where we want it to go. I always say into savings. I have a "portfolio," but it will never let me retire. I'd rather hoard the money because I didn't have any when I was younger. I remember my mom getting a power bill when I was like nine (3rd grade) and being really distraught about not being able to pay for it. I saw the pain in her face and it caused me to cry.

That same year, for Christmas, her boyfriend bought me a trampoline, a blue jean jacket, and a remote control car. I told my mom had it not been for him, I wouldn't have had a Christmas. She was pretty distraught about that. I'll never forget saying that or the look on her face.

M5 and a Corolla differ a lot. You can tell from someone's car what class they come from, usually. Rich - tasteful, simple. Poor - terrible or redneck dream styles. Idiot - flashy popular brand with more looks than quality. 'meretricious'

Also, caring about small amounts of money vs big-picture stuff. It amazed me how people would harp about $5 here and there after I would spend thousands to avoid working in the wrong network.

i grew up in a rented apartment but we all had our own rooms and food was never an issue. we always had food. however, we didnt have money to spend on brand clothes, trips and **** like that.

also we never received any assistance from the goverment. i thought i was poor growing up because i couldnt get J's, or brand clothes like other kids who had that but were on food stamps. never understood it until i got older

this is very fecal centric.
