What are some signs that indicate you grew up poor?

For me, I always used the stove as a heater because we only had one heater in the house. We had one window unit air conditioner.

I also use bread for hamburger buns, hotdog buns, and "rolls."

I ate mac n cheese, bread, and French fries for a meal.

I wore the same clothes two to three times a week. They were clean, but I had no other choices.

What some other signs someone grew up poor?

Had those too. And them mac n cheese, bread, and fry meals were in 1990.

My momma worked a full time job, a part time job, and a seasonal job just to make what ends meet that she could get to meet.

they buy the most expensive showy brands as soon as they get a job that pay decently later in life

think a luxury car brand (mercedes, audi, bmw) is an important status symbol

think a nice watch (rolex etc) are important status symbols

I didn't grow up poor at all, but loved making ketchup sandwiches. Everyone thought I was weird except my dad who tried it and jumped on the bandwagon.

This.

The job doesn't even have to be good. It just has to pay for it.

Never paying for services like lawncare, home/car maintenance, unless you have no choice. Doing everything yourself.

I still drive a shiitbox and fix it myself even though I can afford something much better

Not to be overly pedantic but I think you mean low knowledge not low IQ. Or maybe even ignorance due to lack of worldly experience. I grew up poor, around poor people and now live and work around middle to upper middle class people and I'd say IQ is no better in my current social group than my previous social group. Poor people just don't typically get as many opportunities to display their IQ level IMO.

I think that is more a being frugal issue than a growing up poor issue. Plenty of families out there stay wealthy by making cuts like these on a consistent basis.

Be happy you live that way.

You know how people with money can just up and go to any restaurant they want, without worrying how much they have to spend? And how they can do it often? And how they eat whatever they want on the menu?

For me, growing up, going to McDonald's was like that. Dead srs. If mom could afford a happy meal, that was my fancy eating for the month. Otherwise, it was a double cheeseburger and we'd ask for an extra bun to make two hamburgers out of it.

Also, going to Pensacola was a vacation, like how people plan to go to Europe. That was my vacation. I went to the beach once in like 15 years.

Always finishing everything on your plate when you eat, a wealthy person can leave food on their plate and not feel guilty.

Not having a constant supply of electricity without various power outages through the day
Having clean potable water nearby
Not having piles of trash on the streets

Are we talking about real poverty or first world poverty?

I thought everyone kept their bar of soap in the plastic tofu container? No? That and using plastic grocery bags as luggage.

Never being picky about food. Thinking that people who cut the crust off bread are absolute lunatics.
Not knowing how to buy properly fitting clothes.

srs answers:

- talking openly about salary. Friends that grew up poor but have good jobs now talk openly about how much they make, save, stuff like that. Old money and 'class' keeps that stuff hidden

- look in their kitchen. Can be a nice house but if they grew up poor their kitchen will still be stocked with Oreos, 2 liters, frozen pizzas, other poverty food

- spending money they dont have on displays of wealth. Basically things like luxury cars that are leased and new. Wealthy people are smart with money. Buying a new car isn't smart.

- hobbies. If someone has never been abroad, never done wealthier hobbies like go skiing, surefire sign

This hit me like a ton of bricks. At one time, I was making 130k or so a year. Not a ton of money but pretty good. I'd tell anyone, and wouldn't be trying to brag about it. Just so thankful. Then I took a job making 4/5th less money from that job.

Checking price tags. I’m so good at percentages and adding chit (being asian help) up now I have my month’s budget the day I get my paycheck. Dunno how people can just buy chit without looking at the tag
