Do you age while you are "observing?" You can only go see so much within a lifetime. If you don't age (like you return to your current body in an instant no matter how long you were gone observing, I'd choose the second).

You could literally change the course of human history regardless of financial gain:

-go to an alien planet, figure out their technology (for space travel, unlimited energy, etc)
-use your knowledge of future world events to change what will happen (stop the next plague before it happens, assassinate the next Stalin/Mao, etc)
-use your knowledge of the past to correct current wrongs. you will know where the evidence of everything is, if not completely destroyed. where the bodies are buried, how they changed the votes, how someone cheated etc.
- you will know everyone's deepest darkest secret/crime. Incredible leverage
