RIP to him. What horrible news to wake up to on my birthday as he was one of my favorite guitarists, frontmen, and they were one of my top bands of all-time. Had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, have photos together, and got to enjoy seeing him perform 25-26 times since '03. Always a blast, though the last couple tours were a step below their peak (COB was on their way to disband, so it's understandable. The shows were still great!). What a tremendous talent to be lost.

He was in better form on their last tour than the prior one, which was around the time the rest of the band apparently had enough of whatever his issues were and disbanded. I know many suspect his recent sickly look was due to some hard and dirty drugs, though I really hope it isn't. It would explain a lot of why the group bounced, after having put up w/his drinking so much and being unable to help him. Then again, all that could have led to liver or other issues. Either way, not a good situation, though you'd hate to think he kicked one habit for a worse one. If it was anything he didn't lend assistance to, then ****...you almost don't know what's worse at this point.

I remember first hearing Follow The Reaper and being blown away. Ran out and picked up Hatebreeder and Something Wild, then Hate Crew dropped shortly after. Amazing timeline. They get discounted a lot for the post-Are You Dead Yet? stuff, somewhat understandably when you compare to their first few albums, but Halo of Blood was AWESOME and all the others at minimum had a few bangers worth keeping in rotation. Hexed was pretty good too, but missing some of the heaviness that Halo had. I was really looking forward to seeing what his new band was going to do to build off that point.

For those who might not be aware, check out his old stuff from SINERGY, with his ex Kim Goss and Jesper Stromblad. They had some killer songs!

Also there was a book (ghost-written autobiography, I believe) released last year that seems to have gotten zero press in the US. I keep trying to find a copy but it seems I'll have to order from Europe. Although today I did notice I can get an e-book version on Google Play now... That should hopefully be an interesting read.

Bodom After Midnight will be releasing an EP with 2 originals and a cover:

https://napalmrecords.com/bodom-after-midnight
On April 23, 2021, the melodic death metal formation BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT will be releasing via Napalm Records

The EP Paint The Sky With Blood. The EP was already recorded in Finland in late 2020 and should be the start of a journey that ended far too early. The three-track disc is an impressive, overwhelming obituary for an absolute legend of the metal scene, an incomparable singer / guitarist and at the same time symbolizes a modern homage to the genre itself. A storm of angry guitars and stormy drums rises, merges with the Alexi Laiho's versatile voice and leads to a huge sound universe with the title "" Paint The Sky With Blood "", which opens the 14-minute EP of the same name. The track is truly reminiscent of some well-known early CHILDREN OF BODOM classics while reflecting exciting new and modern influences.

The second hit - "" Payback's a Bitch "- seeks lyrical retribution with massive riffing and delivers a tough offensive that is second to none. The interplay of Alexi Laiho, guitarist Daniel Freyberg, Waltteri Väyrynen (known as the drummer of Paradise Lost), Mitja Toivonen (ex Santa Cruz bassist) and live keyboardist Vili Itäpelto is not only proof of the band's extraordinary musical ability, but also shows their genre-technical changeability. The final cover song "Where Dead Angels Lie" ", originally from the Swedish extreme metal formation DISSECTION, gives an absolute classic a new note. Scary riffs and the vocals alternating between threatening murmurs and characteristic guttural, distorted depths, give this version an undeniable BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT touch. With Paint The Sky With Blood, BODOM AFTER MIDNIGHT hold the scepter of metal in their hands and present an excerpt from a unique legacy. "
I'll be buying the CD or digital copy for sure.

Ex-Children Of Bodom frontman Alexi Laiho died of “alcohol-induced degeneration of the liver and pancreas connective tissue” according to former wife

https://www.loudersound.com/news/ale...death-revealed

You pretty much knew it. Hate to see it. Now his ex Kim Goss, widow, and family are all fighting about everything to do with it and you can't tell what's what. I think a lot speaks for itself when you see the mud each side is slinging at each other, which is also very unfortunate. With all of this coming to light, it makes me recall thinking that when Alexi signed away his rights to COB it was due to his awareness of impending death and making it so the rest of the band got everything without question. Although, it's being said that this was all a surprise and Alexi didn't know, but considering his condition and length of affliction it's hard to really believe he couldn't figure something was up. Plus, as private as he's always been, would he have told anyone/everyone? Likely not.

All in all, just more sad news about everything surrounding it.
