Multi Billion Dollar Hedge Fund tries to short - meaning borrow and sell the stock, to buy back at a lower value and make profit on the difference - a stock.
Redditors buy the stock, and refuse to sell it to the Hedge Fund driving the price through the roof.
Multi Billion Dollar Hedge fund lost billions buying back stock.

WSB has 2 mil active users. ACTIVE. They are able to get billionaires' attention to even help push their schemes harder. It's not illegal what they do, since they are just like an investment club. They don't have insider info. Although I wouldn't be surprised if wall street pushes for ramifications against retail investment groups and institutions to avoid this going forward.
Misc cannot make a dent on stock prices. We don't have the user base anymore and at our peak maybe only half at most would have even been interested in this kinda stuff. Not 2 million autists like reddit WSB.
my question for finance guys.. can't the hedge fund just double down on their shorts and put new short sells in? They aren't wrong. How long can WSB keep GameStop pumped up like this? The company will be in the chitter in 5 to 10 years so the short play is unbeatable and I feel like the hedge funds can stay solvent longer.

/biz/ is brilliant for memes, but usually terrible for investment advice. People who are still not understanding what short and long options in the stock market are, I'll break it down in simple terms for this issue.
Let's say you look at shares of the MISC, and believe it will tank in the next month. You go to your friend (who owns MISC shares) and say "Listen buddy, let me borrow your 100 MISC shares, and I will sell them immediately. In a month, I will buy them back from the market and return them to you (in other words, you're borrowing his investment to make a gamble/bet). Your friend agrees to this, and allows you to borrow the shares. To make things simple, each MISC share = $1. You sell all shares for $100.
In a month time, now you owe your friend his 100 MISC shares back. As you predicted, you notice the market tanked, and each MISC share =$0.50. So you buy 100 shares back for $50. You hand him back the 100 shares you paid $50, and retain the other $50 that you made off your bet. You made money, and your friend is probably upset he's holding something (MISC shares) worth less.
-----
Going back to this hedge fund example, the Hedge Fund decided to game the market by entering into this short for GME (borrow GME shares from someone, sell them, and buy them back later) at a low price, let's say $4/share for GME (an example). Redditors interfered when they heard this, and bought up the GME shares ASAP, driving up its value/price to $80/share (also an example). When the Hedge Fund has to return all the shares, they are now going to have to pay $76/share for GME.
Hedge Funds are huge, so they aren't buying 100 shares, they are buying in the thousands/millions. So essentially, they will be paying millions/billions just to return the shares to whoever they made this agreement with.
Let me know if I can make it any clearer.

John makes a profit off the stock drop, minus the commission.Legit have no idea what any of this means. Can someone provide me with brief rundown of the situation for reps
If Tom knows John is shorting a stock, he can trap John buy running up the stock price. He can do that by buying the stock, or buying options on the stock.
If Tom runs up the stock price too much, Mark starts to panic and issues a margin call to John because Mark fears losing the value of the stock he "loaned". If that margin call is large enough, John might not be able to pay it. John would be forced to buy the stock at the market price to meet the margin call. If the stock is higher than it was when John "borrowed" it, he'll lose a lot of money (sell low, buy high). The people selling to him at that higher price (Tom in this example) will make a lot of money (buy low, sell high).
It's basically a high stakes game of chicken. If you have enough money behind you, you can play this game very aggressively and make large profits. You have to know when somebody is over-extended on an option like this, and you have to have the resources to call their hand, but you can make lots of money.

The plot thickens. Shorts have re-established positions much higher, driving the prices down. They were winning again. But then some random billionaire jumps in on reddits side.

According to zerohedge, Melvin capital because they had puts, had to disclose their positions. Apparently regular short positions do not have to be disclosed and that's why they are more popular. The list of Melvin capital shorts is very similar to the most shorted stocks

Some Redditors on WSB used the system against Wall Street and essentially used the same play Wall Street has been using to screw us, to screw them (taking some of the money back essentially).
It's a feel good story. Except a lot of the people on WSB were late to the party and will lose everything.

Interesting. How does it end then? Whats the idea here. When does Melvin have to return the shares?
"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

What was the mistake, was it disclosed by accident or something?Basically John thinks a stock is going down. He "borrows" that stock from Mark and sells it at the current price, promising to replace the stock he "borrowed" at some future time. If the stock does go down, then he buys it later at the lower price and returns it to Mark. Mark makes a small commission. John makes a profit off the stock drop, minus the commission.

Secondly, can't the big hedgefund just ride out the wave until it goes back down? The company isn't making money so it will eventually continue to tank if the redditors slow down on pumping money into stocks right? Or is the war already lost for the hedgefund guys?

Some Redditors on WSB used the system against Wall Street and essentially used the same play Wall Street has been using to screw us, to screw them (taking some of the money back essentially).
It's a feel good story. Except a lot of the people on WSB were late to the party and will lose everything.

Robinhood is what's really enabling this eh? It's opening up a lot of retail traders to risky leveraged options trading (using borrowed money), giving them far more impact than their conventional finances would suggest
