I think he stepped down for possible foray into politics. He conquered the business world; might as well give politics a try.

Jobs was mostly a figure head toward the end. Most of the guys in these positions end up being.

It doesn't really matter who the CEO is, Bezos IS Amazon. He'll still have all the juice he wants to make the big calls without needing to do the practical things once he's not CEO.
