avoid blue light for one (see apps or flux for desktop), go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same everyday to adjust the circadian rythmn, workout to to tire the body, try staying calm (breathing exercises can help), and try not to stress to much, avoid medication please as it could make things a lot worse in the long run, best of luck to you and your wife brah

As somebody who has dealt with this a few times, sleeping aids will not work. Your wife needs to hop on a CBT-I Program.
Unless you have a medical condition, Insomnia is caused by anxiety or some kind of disruption in her natural body clock. At some point your wife has associated anxiety/panic with sleep. So now when she gets into bed(despite being super tired) she can't seem to sleep. The longer she tosses and turns, the worse it gets. CBT-I has two staples in which need to be exercised.
1. Set a particular bed time & wake up time and abide by it no matter what. Your body wants to be on a schedule and if this was thrown off for whatever reason it needs to be reset.
2. When you go to bed but cant sleep after 30 minutes or so, get out of bed and go into another room and do some light activity like read, draw, listen to a podcast, etc. This will break that toxic association your wifes brain has with her bed = no sleep. This may seem counter intuitive, but you will get nowhere tossing and turning. Do this for as many times until she falls asleep. Even if she wakes up with hardly any sleep at her designated wake time, do not sleep in. The sleep drive must build up and the natural body clock must return to a set schedule.

Only a few are readily available and actually work.
-Melatonin is hit or miss. Some swear by it, others feel nothing. Clinical studies do suggest some effect however, with the most effective dose being around 0.3-0.5 mg. Those 10 mg pills are way too much, and in this case less is definitely more. Typically causes no issues the next day.
-Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in Benadryl, Zzzquil, plenty of others. It's an antihistamine, it works well, but builds tolerance super quickly. 25 mg or 50 mg is usually enough to make you very sleepy, but if you start using it every day it stops working quickly. Lasts about 4 hours, so low chance of a hangover or grogginess the next day.
-Doxylamine is another histamine, the active ingredient in Unisom tabs and others. Structurally very similar to Diphenhydramine, but a lot of people say it's stronger, and it has a much longer half-life so it'll last around 6-8 hours. Can cause grogginess the next day. Personally, this is the most effective out of all the ones I've tried, and others I know agree. My ex took one once for the first time and was out like a rock, couldn't even remember getting into bed.

-Blackout curtains for a completely dark room
-White noise (fan)
-Absolutely no movement on bed (you might have to sleep in separate beds SRS. I can't do sleepovers with girls because it hurts my sleep)
-Melatonin
-A PRESCRIPTION med that helps her relax (I use ****** and only need to put a tiny bit between my cheek and gum to help me sleep. ***** might also work)
I'm a night person and have trouble sleeping, as well as am tired the next day no matter what if I have to wake up before noon. SRS. I can sleep for 9 hours and will be tired unless I can sleep in and get up at my own pace.
NO natural meds do anything except melatonin, and even melatonin is kinda BS. It doesn't help if you're a true insomniac. You need a legit tranquilizer/something that f*cks you up. Marijuana would also be worth a try if she doesn't get drug tested.
