Marathon running is legit retarded. It's like taking your car out every day and beating the piss out of it...redlining at every stop light until one day the piston departs the bottom of the engine. Same chit. Moderation is key. I do 30 mins of stairs a day...more than enough cardio.

Long distance running, ie. Marathons is confirmed to be very bad for your health, srs. Anyone thinking ironmans, marathons, etc. are healthy are wrong.

Afaik you also don’t really need to do much to dramatically lower your chance of heart issues, but 3x20 minutes of walking is not enough.

He’s not as wrong as OP is making it out to be.

there is a big gap between "long distance running" and walking 20 minutes

walking 20 minutes isnt even enough for someone in their 60s and 70s to maintain optimal health.

Not everyone is able to handle long distance running. Or other forms of extreme exercise.

Plenty of young people have died due to congenital defects.

There is a risk in engaging in any form of exercise.

Depends how much. Your average Joe hobby runner will have nothing to worry about. Extreme runners and ultra marathon runners? They're pushing it. Any extreme is bad and isn't "healthy." Anyone that played a college or high level sport knows that it isn't healthy to have 5 hours of practice a day pushing your limits physically, fighting through injuries, etc.

But you should do more than 20 min. of walking a week imo. And to the guy talking about Stan Efferding, he doesn't say just do 3 10 min. walks a day for cardio health. That is to aid in digestion and help further fight against insulin resistance when consuming a lot of carbs like his vertical diet suggests (which is a great diet btw). He also does things like stairs quite often.

Also LOL at taking cardiovascular advice from a drugged up, lying narcissist. Maybe his heart can only take 20 min. walk a few times a week from the gear at his age.

No one has stated exactly how far long distance runners are running. Would you classify them as 3 miles a day, 5 miles a day, 10 miles a day 20 miles a day?

I mean...going to that extreme probably isn't the healthiest thing to do, and studies (including one cited above) seem to support that. The only 2-3 hours a week being optimal sounds kind of stupid, but the people conducting these studies probably know more than me.

I always figure people like Navy Seals are the epitome of health. They aren't the strongest, fastest, leanest, or biggest, but they combine all of them into an overall condition that is unmatched by others. Get a marathon runner to bench 225 for reps, they can't. Get a powerlifter to swim for a mile with scuba gear on, they can't.

And as much as I hate to say it, Crossfit really is the perfect balance of strength, endurance, and cardio conditioning. The only problem is its evolved into something everyone's parents do completely wrong until they tear their ACL. Hell, even those competitive legitimate Crossfitters like Rich Froening are what I'd imagine what "being healthy" means. Has muscle mass, can lift, can run, jump, pullup, swim, etc.

A bodybuilder doesn't give a fuk about cardio, but if you want to be healthy, you need to be able to run a sub 8 minute mile imo. Being classified as obese via your BMI with increased muscle mass, and getting winded after a walk is not the definition of being healthy lmao.

3 and 5 miles a day isn't really that long and I don't think it's enough to impact health negatively. probably even 10 miles as well as long as you don't do it everyday

you probably start pushing it once you get over 40 miles a week. However elite athletes who run 50-120 miles a week are still healthier than a non-runner.

An observational study I believe showed that people who ran for 30-45 minutes per session, at a 8:30-10:00 mile pace around 5-20 miles per week were most healthy. I'm thinking probably 10 miles is a happy medium, that's like three 5-6 km runs a week.

I've seen news/studies that said that long duration high intensity exercise causes heart scarring, but looks like that has been refuted.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/...1002/clc.23360

Make sure to get enough strontium

These findings are the first to reveal the cardioprotective effects of strontium ions against I/R injury, which may provide a new therapeutic approach to ischemic heart disease at a lower cost, with higher stability, and with potentially greater safety.

I always found long distance running to be time consuming (no sh!t), boring, but mostly a pain on my joints and shins (shin splints galore). After my track days were done, I found my bread and butter to be twice a week MAX, with either a 15-20 minute HIIT workout or sprints/hill sprints.

I don’t know about heart stuff, but it seems most people really start wearing their bodies out training long distance running.

And also...
