Angelina Jolie is just insanely top-tier superstar material. And my ex once called her the most beautiful woman in Hollywood for her time. I could see it. Some of her work in print advertising was just...no words to describe her beauty. So, for the longest time, I didn't have any trouble understanding why Pitt would leave Aniston for her. Also, I never watched Friends. There have been long periods of my life where I didn't have ready access to a TV with a good selection of channels and/or I had little interest in most mainstream top-popularity shows, just because I'm "different like that". So, at the time, I was never properly impressed with Jennifer Aniston, although I heard enough women say that they wanted her hair - enough for me to be curious.

I use the term "properly impressed" because impressions can count for a whole, whole lot.

As I said before here and elsewhere, I don't follow the mainstream much, even less so on the mainstream's time. I can be really, really behind on catching really big movies and shows - years after everybody else, although I have seen a fair bit of odd things that most people never do.

So, I saw "The Object of My Affection" WAY after the fact.

***Quick segue here before I really state my case: I was sitting in the cafeteria of my alma mater college one day, just minding my own business, eating lunch, and somebody (I don't remember who) who was somebody I didn't usually eat lunch with and I think I only had a little bit of an acquaintance with, asked me a sort of left-field question. We were talking about Hollywood stuff, actors/actresses, movies, IIRC. He asked me what I thought about Jennifer Aniston vs Angelina Jolie. This would have been 1998 or 1999 when this happened. When he was asking me and talking about it and listening to my answer, he had this weird smile and way of listening to me that I always thought was bizarre - enough so for me to remember the look and the feeling, wondering why he was so interested in my response. It was as if he was jockeying for my answer and opinion in a kind of eagerly juicy way - as if there was a salacious quotient to the whole thing. I remember that I answered that, to me, to use a poker analogy, Jennifer Aniston seemed like she was the kind of person who had 10s and Jacks in her hand, and Angelina Jolie seemed like the kind of person who had Kings and Aces in her hand. I have long remembered that strange short conversational point.***

But combined with Aniston's incredible staying power, hearing so many women say they wanted her hair, the whole gigantic thing with her and Pitt and Jolie, and my memory of that strange interaction in the cafeteria during college, I have thought about her from time to time. And as I said before, I had never really watched "Friends", so I didn't have a proper impression of her. I had never seen her in anything, really, that I can recall, until I saw "Object of My Affection". I think that "We're the Millers" is the only other thing I've ever seen her in. Oh yes, I did see "He's Just Not That Into You", when I saw it at the theatre once, but between my favoritism of Drew Barrymore and dropping my jaw in sheer disbelief at the hotness of Bradley Cooper, I don't think I paid much attention to Aniston.

So, I think it was at least a few years after "He's Just Not That Into You" came out that I saw "The Object of My Affection". And as I was watching it (oh Paul Rudd...sigh...another one), I was keeping in mind my conversation and the big deal with Aniston and Pitt and Jolie, and women wanting her hair and such. So, she seemed like she was doing decently enough in the movie as it went along and I was watching it.HOWEVER...HOWEVER...HOWEVER..., and it's been a while since I've seen it, so I'm going by my memory, there was a scene where she was in her apartment or house or whatever it was that she lived in and she was walking toward the camera (from upstage to downstage) and the lighting was kind of soft and slightly dim, but angled in such a way that when she walked toward the camera in, IIRC, some snug, light-colored jeans and a black lingerie top,THAT WAS WHEN I UNDERSTOOD!!!She impressed me as looking like a magical wood nymph, or a sprite, or a felicitous fairy or something. She just had a quality that would really register on the "Je ne sais quoi" continuum. THAT was when I understood why even one such as Brad Pitt would fall for her. She was bathed in that delicate semi-other-worldly light and she was one with it. So many people couldn't even begin to pull that off. That had to be either intrinsic or very keenly studied.

Added to that, as I have already said, Aniston has shown a lot of staying power. She seemed like a girl-next-door, though potentially alpha-ish, from what I could gather when she was younger. But now she looks like someone who has really, really been tested and she isn't going away at all. She just has that look of reaching full maturity in early middle age, and she has seen the bottom line, hit the bottom line, understands the bottom line, and she is not going to fall through any of the cracks in any sort of bottom line. She just has that look in her eyes. So, I imagine by now, she has had enough life experience, and she definitely has some intrinsic magic, so she is quite the mix of a number of things, and would be a formidable match for just about any other woman when it comes to the attention of just about any man.
