For a Television series it was ahead of its time, same same with Sopranos

Still got some of the best villains out of any show/movie

After just watching it for the 3rd or 4th time, I’ll say this about The Wire:

It’s the most difficult show to get into, by far. You need to give it your full undivided attention and use subtitles to help. It’s unlike any other show in that it feels like you’re actually in it, instead of just watching something to be entertained. There’s barely any music. And it doesn’t give a sh!t if the viewer is bored. It just takes the city of Baltimore and hits the zoom-in button, and shoves your face in it.

Once you get into it, you’ll be obsessed.

To be fair, I totally get why a lot of people tap out after the first 3-4 episodes. It’s extremely difficult to get into unless you’re dead set on watching all of it. If someone watched all 5 seasons with a full attention span and still said it was boring, then I’d question their IQ.

The Wire is overrated in the lens of 2021 but when it came out it reinvented the genre. The impact it had is comparable to the first season of True Detective. The cinematography and story was deeper and more fluid than any other show before it.

It seems dated now because the genre has been so refined since its inception.

This exactly. The story itself and some of the characters are obviously dramatized, but the actual interactions of those characters is very grounded in actual human behavior and isn't overly forced or staged. The characters actually exist more than some people born into modernity ever will.

The Wire is an excellent depiction of different institutions and how they interact with law and crime. It’s less about the typical cast, more about the city of Baltimore. It’s a slow burn and the first season is a lot to digest, took me a while to get through it.

I understand why people think it’s boring. It’s no Hollywood blockbuster. The show is isn’t at all focused on giving you a Tony Soprano or a Walter White. The reason I personally enjoy shows like Breaking Bad and Banshee and Sons of Anarchy is that strong main character “hero’s journey” that I can latch on to. Even if they’re an anti-hero, it’s more fun to watch than something so uncompromising like The Wire.

True Detective season 1 is more like one long, but brilliant movie to me. I have it neck and neck with Band of Brothers. Never even bothered to watch the other seasons of True Detective.

It’s one thing to have one season be amazing, but making an entire series near perfect is pretty much impossible.

I couldn't get into it either, it was really overwrought yet portrayed itself as gritty and realistic. Did not have the patience or pretention to enjoy it. It's not "uncompromising" or "profound". It's not real.

I actually lived in the ghetto and it's not like The Wire. White suburbanites will watch it to feel like they understand the struggle and ghetto life, but it's really just gawking at fictional poor people. It's entertainment, but it dresses itself up as heartfelt intellectual engagement with the ghetto.

A lot of original American culture comes from people less fortunate entertaining those with comfortable lives. The music, theatre, the food, and many other things. Our struggles and traditions are amusing diversions from the bland and easy lives of those better off. The ghetto, the trailer park, the farm, the reservation, and more. Places they would not want to live, but will pay top dollar to be amused by.

Werd. I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't seeing what the fuss is about. Sat through two seasons and this show is mediocre as hell. There are few interesting characters (Omar White, Brother Mouzone). I had to have subtitles on as couldn't understand what the ghetto thugs were saying. Even otherwise good actor Idris Elba mumbled like hell.

I am actually offended that many people put this show on par with 'The Sopranos' lol. The Sopranos is WAY out of the league of 'The Wire.

Took me a while but I binge watched The Sooranos and The Wire back to back and I’d say that i enjoyed The Wire wayyyy more than the Sopranos. I hated everyone in Tony’s crew. Chris Moltisante was a douche, Paulie Walnuts was a douche, Silvio Dante I didn’t give a fuk about, Carmella was a kunt, Meadow was a liberal kunt, AJ was a pathetic loser, etc. I just didn’t give a fuk about any of them except for Tony really. Just too many characters I couldn’t empathize with in any way. I know they say that if you hate a character, it means they did a good job acting. But not in this case. You can be a jerk character while still having some redeeming qualities to keep the viewer interested. I just couldn’t get as invested in the characters as much as I did with The Wire.

I tried to get into The Sopranos as well, a lot of it was just Tony whining about his infidelity and weird chit about Jews. I love gangster movies though so it's a damn shame.

It seemed more like something that married couples watch to get horny, like most chit on HBO. Just a bit more plot than porn but still porn, keeps people tuning in every week.

I think The Wire serves better as an educational show for people who are truly interested in all the ugly truths on how the world works and how people weigh the terrible options they find themselves limited to in certain scenarios.

My mistake the first time I attempted watching it was that I wanted to be entertained the same way I did when I watched Breaking Bad, Dexter, Game of Thrones, etc. it’s just not that kind of show. It’s unforgiving in its dryness but behind all of that is something bigger. Hard to explain.
